After dropping my daughter off at school today, I treated myself to a Cappuccino and a blueberry scone. For some reason, I just kept driving west this morning. I went through Ghent, fondly remembering the pizza I had at KB's. The morning light was glorious on the fields of corn and soy. As I… MORE

We are in our new home, and it is a beaut! Sure, it has all of the creaks and groans of an older home. (Both of us were born/made in 1958.) The home went through some cosmetic surgery whereas I am still saggy and well, old looking. Aside from cosmetics, the functionality of the house has been… MORE

It's been five years since moving here. My family and I have had a great time in New Jersey. There are times when I would dispute the term "Garden State." I think it would be more truthful to call it the "Tick State," or the "Vermin Deer State," or even the "Taxation State." None of those… MORE

So I was gazing at the AR website as I all too often do. My eyes beheld a wondrous site! Fondant Potatoes by Chef John were calling out to me. They looked so delicious and easy to make that I knew I had to try them. As I read the Food Wishes blog, I came across these fateful words: "Every… MORE

When I was a young man, I saw no need to keep my room clean or tidy. As long as there was a clear path to the door leading to the rest of the house from my bed, and a path from the bed to the closet, I was happy. I knew pretty much where everything I needed was, and a quick sniff would reveal… MORE

I've had an interest in cooking and baking as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my mom bake bread and dinner rolls. I also remember her scratch made chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting. Imagine frosting that doesn't come out of a can! Scratch made… MORE

The following is a post from another blog I used to write before I started writing posts here on AR.  It is a test, more or less, to see if I can get stupid photos to stay in line. It seems to be working. When we agreed to provide a car to Eldest, I thought that school year mornings would… MORE

I just wanted to show off my garden like King Sparta and FarmChef! Trouble is, I'm not really going to put in a garden this year. So I'm going to cheat and post last year's photos. I just wish I could get them to inline instead of at the bottom of the blog. I have another blog, which I am not… MORE

It's been a while, but I was finally able to get into the kitchen to do some cooking. Something faceless. Sentence fragments. Cool. Anyway, I made four delicious dishes for our dinner today. Though delicious, and complimentary, they did not present well together. It was a very orange, yellow… MORE

I saw mention of a life altering food invention somewhere just a day or two ago. Does anyone remember when a couple of months before the Segway was introduced to the market, it was called the most impactful invention since the wheel? Most of us didn't even know what they were talking about… MORE

About Me
I'm old and smelly, kinda like a really good salami with that really nice white mould all over it.
My favorite things to cook
Meat, carbs, meat, carbs, meat, carbs and did I mention meat?
My favorite family cooking traditions
Drop a plate of Pierogis and sausages in front of me and watch my eyes glaze over in pure joy.
My cooking triumphs
Schweinebraten mit Knoedel und Krautsalat. Also Edel Hirsch Gulasch was very nice. I make killer Spaetzle and Knockerl also.
My cooking tragedies
There aren't enough electrons in cyberspace! :) Actually, the tragedies usually involve well intentioned creativity out of control.
