Exciting Things Are Happening

Have you noticed the short but exciting blog entries by All Recipes.com interns? The ones going overseas to tell us about food and culture far away? Let’s give each of them a high five and our best wishes.
The ones I have noticed are: tukasuy- Japan; SKokkie- Russia; kmy- Australia; crystal.rie- Korea; Adam- Poland; valboileau- Quebec. If I have missed somebody, leave a comment with their user name and destination, and I’ll update this post to include them. Maybe, AR will send us complete information in a post or email?
Interns, we wish each of you an exciting, memorable and informative stay. Take lots of notes and photos and we are anxious for your blog updates!
I think AR definitely has a winner with this program! I am on AR nearly every day (Ok… every day) and I may never close the AR window, now!
This will likely be my last entry before The Midwest Roundup at Cat Hill’s. My wife and I have prepared and packed everything we can leaving out only those things that we require for every day. (I am notorious in my family, for leaving something behind so my travel companions may soon wish that I had remembered my deodorant.) Even travel is going to be fun. We leave MI and head to West Lafayette, IN to pick up Lady Sparkle and then on to Magnolia, IL to Magnolia Blossom’s house. Magnolia Blossom has opened her house for us to overnight. In the morning, the four of us are off for Kearney, MO and then on to Cat’s place up by Plattsburg, MO. It is a long trip but when my wife found out that Magnolia Blossom had relegated me to ride in the trunk, she vacuumed it so I would not be riding in a dusty trunk. (She’s very caring, don’t you think?)

Just think Mike, during all those hours in the trunk, you can close your eyes and imagine that you are an intern for AR on your own journey. I just hope the ladies remember to let you out during pitstops. Have fun.

I read some of the internship blogs, I also wish AR would write a blog and fill us in on their new idea. Maybe they have it explained on FB;(

Doug! You are a j-e-e-n-y-u-s!

Jun. 4, 2012 8:03 am
Sure hope AR does something to inform us, Gramma! BTW. Have I told you how much I enjoy calling you "Gramma"?

Good morning Mike. I have noticed those blogs from the interns too. I haven't heard anything from AR about this new program. Looking forward to their posts this summer. Have a great road trip and give Cat a hug from me. I sure wish I could join you.

It IS very exciting! If AllRecipes is looking for an intern/ambassador to visit a South Seas Island. . .I'm your candidate! :) See you soon!!

I'm supposed to be working but to a minute to check in! The yard is not perfect so pakc those weed-free glasses you will need to wear :) I have seen those blogs but didn't have time for a read. I figured I would catch up with them later. Just a few days left before you are all here! So excited! Now back to work!

have a blast mike! the intern idea is novel, in that they can blog about what they find on their travels. i doubt you will be in the trunk...probably more of a chaffeur role :)...ya are gonna meet some excellent folks!

Mike - we always leave something behind also. One year it was the "bathroom bag" - hubby's contacts, etc. included. So - we called our neighbor and asked them to break in, pack it up and ship it to us since we were going to be gone 10 days. Now we always have a note on the table next to my purse to remind us of the bathroom bag. We'll never forget that again, but it's always something! I wish I was going to CatHill's! But, I had a blast at Bellepepper's for the Buckeye Bash. :) Have a comfy ride in the trunk.... LOL

Baking Nana, I'm making a list of folks (real and imagined) that want me to give Cat a hug for them. ... Thanks for the well wishes!

Jun. 4, 2012 1:07 pm
Sorry, Lady Sparkle, but I have laid claim to that ticket! Stand aside!

Jun. 4, 2012 1:09 pm
Cat, I would far rather see a few weeds (or a lot of weeds) out of place than to have you stressed and worn out! Relax, good lady! Reeelaaaax!

Jun. 4, 2012 1:11 pm
Hope you are right, Gary! Magnolia Blossom seems quite intent that the trunk should be my dwelling during the ride. Although, she said something about strapping me to the roof.

Jun. 4, 2012 1:12 pm
Eventually, we'll have a plan that will allow us to meet, Mother Ann! I have a couple buzzing around the open spaces in my head.

Jun. 4, 2012 3:11 pm
Get ready, it's gonna be a wild ride... If strapped to the roof, you can feel the wind blowing through your hair (and it won't matter if you forgot the deodorant.)Umm..hmm... hair? Maybe it won't matter.

Jun. 4, 2012 3:26 pm
Oh Goodies!! I was just asking about your trunk ride!! Lol Yeah, some Interesting photos from a part of the car we Never see!! Haha. Safe trip and Drive Carefully Ladies, after all you are hauling around Valuable commodity! ! Haha. Love it!!

Jun. 4, 2012 3:28 pm
Please put my name on the HUG CATHILL list please? ?

Jun. 4, 2012 4:49 pm
The hair does matter, Mag B! I'll use a better glue to hold it on.

Jun. 4, 2012 4:51 pm
Patty Cakes, thanks for telling them to be careful of poor precious me.

Jun. 4, 2012 4:53 pm
Got it! You are officially on the Hug Cathill list. Do you want to give her a "hello" type hug or an extended "Dang, I hope this never ends" type hug.

Jun. 4, 2012 4:59 pm
Waving hand wildly for the South Seas internship. Mike, in spite of the trunk accommodations, I know you are going to have a blast. I so wish I could be there with all of you. I will be in spirit. Make sure you guys keep you cell phones on so I can check in and visit during the party. Warmest aloha.

Jun. 4, 2012 6:14 pm
Stand aside, mauigirl! That internship IS MINE!!! I have sharp elbows, ya know! ... I'm taking my cell plus a 12V charger and a 120V charger. My battery should be well charged for you! In fact, you could break up our trip some if you could call Mag B, Lady S or me Friday morning. I don't know what kind of reception I'll have in the trunk, though.

Jun. 4, 2012 6:21 pm
Darn it...you may have a hard time joining the conversation from the trunk :) BTW I noticed the Buckeyes mentioned that there were no ax murderers in attendance. Might have to warn others of the kidnappers amongst us LOL

Jun. 5, 2012 6:19 am
well, yes Mike, you have mentioned that before-time tells but knows nothing

Jun. 5, 2012 6:23 am
Pick me, pick me..... for the South Seas Internship. I see a contest brewing here! Maybe a cook-off! But, seriously, I've read the internship blogs and am waiting breathlessly for their blogs. See you (well, what's left of you) in 4 days Mike.

Mike-maybe you better pack some snacks for the trip. Food that is easy to access, since you will be riding in the trunk. Perhaps, a traveling pillow. I hope you all have a great time! I am hoping the international blogs are going to be educational as well as yummy. Loved your blog!

I haven't seen the intern blogs yet, but will keep my eyes open. Now everyone, Mike has to keep his strength up because he has a race to run also on the 9th, isn't it? Good luck in that!!

Jun. 5, 2012 8:50 am
I doubt that I'm dealing with kidnappers, mauigirl. Maybe, just mean, like spike heels and whips?

Jun. 5, 2012 8:51 am
Thanks for coming back, gramma! I'll be careful about calling you "gramma" too often, gramma.

Jun. 5, 2012 8:54 am
You can take your place in line, Candice ! Right behind mauigirl. The first place in line is mine and mine alone! ... What's left of me? That sounds ominous. Have you heard something?

Jun. 5, 2012 8:59 am
Hadn't thought about easy access to food, Lela. That may not be such a bad place, after all! Food and a traveling pillow, sounds good!

Jun. 5, 2012 9:45 am
The relay is on the 8th, ibbz. I doubt that I can offer much of a race being an old man with a game leg and 50,000 excuses! For you and all the other donors, I'll make a special effort, though.

Jun. 5, 2012 9:51 am
We're going to be hugging Cat so much that we'll be making up names that AR never heard of...

Jun. 5, 2012 9:59 am
That's the plan!

Jun. 5, 2012 11:16 am
race is not in my vocabulary. . .elucidate. . .relay, I can do. . .walking, skipping (short distance) all good.

Jun. 5, 2012 11:23 am
pack some fabreze to spray in the trunk after they let you out of it. Whew! Have a great time guys, I am jealous.

Jun. 5, 2012 12:34 pm
Am I correct that you are going to participate in the relay? All is well and swell!

Jun. 5, 2012 12:55 pm
Not even covergirl wants me out of the trunk??? Just deodorize the trunk when I'm finally freed??? No sympathy. ... I'm sure we'll have more than a great time, covergirl. Thank you!

Jun. 5, 2012 1:19 pm
LOLOLOL! Another break and maybe I can spell all the words right this time. I got weeds don't worry! And a blasted possum that is digging up all my flowers that I planted and herbs. I have a dear friend coming Friday to help me so don't worry I won't be frazzled, frizzled maybe but not frazzled :) Hmm, trunk vs. the roof. If you are on the roof don't wear chapstick, sand will stick to it. Learned that from riding the Harley!

Jun. 5, 2012 2:06 pm
You do know how to roast a possum, don't you? Quite east, really. Slap it up with some Jack daniels BBQ sauce and mmmm, mmmm! I haven't been educated on the difference between frazzled and frizzled, but I don't want either of them climbing your nerves. Just reeeelaaaaax! So, I have a choice between stinking up the trunk or windburning my poor tender lips?? You gals have no mercy what-so-ever!

Jun. 6, 2012 6:53 am
Have a good trip Mike! Be sure to take along your camera and get some good pics. You will do another blog once you're back to give us all the details! Have fun!

Jun. 6, 2012 8:14 am
Thank you, luv2cook! The trip should be (at least) very different. We have four drivers to share the wheel so nobody should get fatigued. I plan to take lotsa pics and, I'm sure, Magnolia Blossom, Lady Sparkle and my wife will, also. Then there are all the other folks that will be there, too! Pics should not be a problem.

About Me
At age 16, I began cooking when my mother was injured in an accident that kept her off her feet for five weeks. At first, my repertoire was fried hot dogs with pork and beans, boiled hot dogs with macaroni and cheese or pizza from a box. After a couple weeks of this, my younger brother was the first to protest and demand variety and my dad was quick to support him. That was my first cooking challenge, learning to plan a meal. About that time, mom returned from the hospital and from her bed, began teaching me things like roast beef, fried chicken, stews and all the sides and trimmings. In 1967, I married and my wife designated herself as the cook and this continued until 1999. It was then that I (voluntarily) began cooking again. At some point, I realized that I was having fun and began searching for recipes that were more challenging and interesting. I found AR and used it's recipes for a long time before registering and later becoming an active member.
My favorite things to cook
Soups. How can I go wrong? They are a great way to use up leftovers and those veggies that are approaching the end of their usefulness. They are always an original recipe. Roasts and steaks are favored, also. Getting the right "doneness" and choosing appropriate sides for a tastey and attractive meal is a continuing and always evolving menu.
My favorite family cooking traditions
If creating impulsive menus and recipes is a tradition then, (I guess) we have a tradition. A new tradition is developing. I have a fruitcake recipe that, I believe, is near perfection. I make it just before Thanksgiving so it is aged enough for the Christmas/ New Year holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Without a doubt, my own recipe for a Reuben Sandwich. It has been a demanded item for many years and I shared it in my AR blog. http://allrecipes.com/Cook/13101603/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=204609
My cooking tragedies
Too many. I have been able to throw them out and have something new before my wife gets home. Most of the time, anyway.
