My wife doesn't know it (yet) but we are participating in "February: Use What's In the Freezer Month" that I inaugerated last week. After the cleaning of the freezer that we did last month, I pledged to never again let the freezer become a wasteland of food. So far, Mrs. Mike hasn't noticed-… MORE

Once again, Cat Hill is having her annual Midwest Roundup. This year she has scheduled it for June 21,22,23. Also, on that same weekend, there will be an American Cancer Society Relay for Life (R4L) on Friday the 21st. Last year the R4L was in Kearney, MO but they haven't posted their… MORE

I have the pleasure of having a new attachment for our Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. It is a pasta extruder for making macaroni (large and small), thin round spaghetti, fusilli (thin spiral shaped), rigatoni (like macaroni with grooves), and bucatini (long hollow spaghetti). I already had the… MORE

2012 has been relegated to history. It seems, some of the most horrible traits of humanity were exposed and some of natures most horrible traits occurred. There were many acts of heroism, big and small. that marked the year, as well. Locally, one of those heros is an eight year old boy whose… MORE

As we watched Santa approaching from Europe, our hearts were warmed by the Royal Canadian Air Force who generously provided escort service to our Jolly Saint. It was noted that the RCAF jets had afterburners blazing in their effort to keep up with him. I'm convinced that, if Santa hadn't had… MORE

We've been missing the common sense comments from BigShotsMom. She is one of the victims of Hurricane Sandy. She had to spend a few weeks in a shelter until her building was deemed safe. She and her pets are reunited back at their home but communication is scanty. Here's her latest email.… MORE

I reworked my fruitcake, this year. I was very happy with the previous recipe but I didn't resist trying a couple more things in an attempt to improve upon it. Because it is rather expensive to make (very little flour and lots of fruit and pecans) I was quite nervous whenever I thought of… MORE

It's an old house and with the ownership of it comes the problems than an old house has in store for it's occupants. This little bit of heaven sits in a very rural community of approximately 200 other homes of which there are less than fifty homes that were built after WWII. Architecturally,… MORE

It was a busy week of trying to catch up and, hopefully, get ahead of schedule so that our son could take the weekend off to celebrate Thanksgiving. He is a contractor, specifically trim carpentry, and he had conflicts in his schedule because of a rush job that demanded pieces of his days-… MORE

We grew old together and, until recent years, we were seldom far apart. In our final years together, I could only give a smile of recognition as I passed you by but still, remembering the good times together. Never forgetting. Most of our time together was traveling. There was comfort in that… MORE

About Me
At age 16, I began cooking when my mother was injured in an accident that kept her off her feet for five weeks. At first, my repertoire was fried hot dogs with pork and beans, boiled hot dogs with macaroni and cheese or pizza from a box. After a couple weeks of this, my younger brother was the first to protest and demand variety and my dad was quick to support him. That was my first cooking challenge, learning to plan a meal. About that time, mom returned from the hospital and from her bed, began teaching me things like roast beef, fried chicken, stews and all the sides and trimmings. In 1967, I married and my wife designated herself as the cook and this continued until 1999. It was then that I (voluntarily) began cooking again. At some point, I realized that I was having fun and began searching for recipes that were more challenging and interesting. I found AR and used it's recipes for a long time before registering and later becoming an active member.
My favorite things to cook
Soups. How can I go wrong? They are a great way to use up leftovers and those veggies that are approaching the end of their usefulness. They are always an original recipe. Roasts and steaks are favored, also. Getting the right "doneness" and choosing appropriate sides for a tastey and attractive meal is a continuing and always evolving menu.
My favorite family cooking traditions
If creating impulsive menus and recipes is a tradition then, (I guess) we have a tradition. A new tradition is developing. I have a fruitcake recipe that, I believe, is near perfection. I make it just before Thanksgiving so it is aged enough for the Christmas/ New Year holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Without a doubt, my own recipe for a Reuben Sandwich. It has been a demanded item for many years and I shared it in my AR blog.
My cooking tragedies
Too many. I have been able to throw them out and have something new before my wife gets home. Most of the time, anyway.
