Time today for some serious food safety as we gear up for the Big Game! (can I say Super Bowl without getting sued?) Even if you're not much of a football fan, stick with me. Everyone loves a party, but no one wants to go home with leftovers - if they include a nice helping of Staph bacteria.… MORE

About this Cook
I got my first cookbook when I was about 7, it was a Betty Crocker for kids. I started cooking and never looked back. I also like to decorate cakes and cookies as a hobby. My job is a food safety specialist; I have worked mostly in the regulatory field but some in industry as well. Because of my background I'm well versed in foodborne disease and personal and kitchen hygiene and my family thinks I'm a germaphobe! I love food; I love to cook it, eat it, and critique it. I also am very particular about which restaurants I'll eat at...that's the hazard of my job!
My favorite things to cook
Mostly I like to cook for my family or friends. I like to do hors deouvres, desserts, and ethnic foods. I spend a lot of my day in kitchens, but I still like to come home and make dinner for my family.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every Christmas my mom and I have cookie day, where we make huge batches of cookies and treats for everyone. We also usually host Thanksgiving dinner and we try to make some new dishes every year. In our family it's taboo to open a can or warm up frozen foods! Everything is from scratch (mostly), especially for big holiday dinners. We even like to experiment with fancy cocktails and fun drinks for the kids.
My cooking triumphs
I made my brother's wedding cake, the first and only one I have done.
My cooking tragedies
Boy can I mess up candy! Sticky, lumpy, burned, you name it. Can't do candy to save my life. Another one was the first weekend we moved into our very first house when my husband and I were married. I got up early and decided to make a batch of muffins in my new gas oven to surprise him for breakfast. Unfortunately, during the unpacking process, someone helping us had decided to store some of my potholders in the "drawer" under the oven, which was actually the broiler of the gas stove. I had just slid the muffin pan into the oven, when the kitchen filled with black smoke. I didn't know where it was coming from but all the smoke detectors went off and I quickly opened all the windows. My husband ended up having to call the fire department. Since it was a Sunday and the firemen were bored, they sent 3 engines to our house and dragged my stove onto the front lawn, where it burned a big hole in the grass. I was so mortified I stood in the back yard and cried.

Monte Cristo Sandwich - the Real One
Thanks so much for this recipe! Monte cristo has been one of my favorite sandwiches for a years but I didn't have a good recipe til now. Yes it's very heavy, that's why I only indulge once or twice a year!! The only change I made was to saute this in butter (using clarified butter) instead of oil. My family loved this treat for dinner. I served with a nice light fruit salad to offset the clogging of the arteries...LOL Try this once and you won't be disappointed!

8 Treasures
Normally I don't feel it's fair to review a recipe once you've made major changes, but this is a good tasting soup, I just made the changes based on my family's preferences, not because I thought the recipe needed a lot of improvement as written. I should call it "6 Treasures" because I left out the ham and ground beef. (We don't eat a lot of red meat.) I made a half recipe for a family of four, and only used 3 cups of water since it seemed like 4 would be too watery. It turned out just right. I did add some chicken bullion to make the broth more flavorful since I did not use the meat, and I used a can of minishrimp and included the liquid in the can. I think next time I will use full sized shrimp since we all love shrimp. I sauteed the tofu in the vegetable oil before adding the veggies, then added the broth, then the shrimp and lastly the egg. The other change I made was to use frozen corn instead of creamed; thought the creamed would be too sweet. I used shitakes for the mushrooms. I didn't let the soup simmer too long so the ingredients wouldn't get too mushy. I also added a splash of soy sauce and it turned out great! Thanks for a nice soup recipe.

Homemade Irish Cream
Please be very careful when serving anything with raw eggs. You risk illness from Salmonella, among other things. This recipe can be prepared with pasteurized eggs, which come in liquid form in cartons in the refrigerated case at the grocery. This shouldn't alter the taste at all, and there is no risk of illness!
