FINALLY something to blog about! As you all can guess, I love to bake.. but I am a horrible cake decorator, so usually I just keep it simple.. Still yummy but my cakes always look a bit boring LOL. So my cousin was supposed to come today and she didnt, I was going to make her a lemon cake with cream cheese frosting.. but since she isnt coming I decided to make carrot cake and give it to my neighbor who has her husband in the hospital and is very depressed and has her family visiting.
Anywayyyy.. I decided to make it special for her.. She kind of reminds me of Gderr, because she is so dedicated to her loved one. (her husband has been hospitalized for 2 months) . Ok, so below are the results of my first attempt at decorating a cake.. I know, its no masterpiece, but its a start LOL. I hope someday I can make cakes like some of you do.. I dont want to name anyone because alot of you have made some really cool things.
Hugs to all, hope you are all doing well, feel free to share tips or your favorite cake / frosting recipes!
See you on the exchange!
Katie

Katie, I think it's beautiful. I love the little carrots and orange and green dots. Your neighbor will love it and will be able to tell you put a lot of love into your work. Great job on your first decorated cake! It's really pretty.

thanks for the comments! my neighboor was really sweet and brought me a piece of the cake, she said : "you have to taste this, it is so good!" LOL! By the way I used carrot cake III: with only 1 cup oil, 1 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup white sugar.. and 2 1/2 cups sugar in the frosting.. I have made it just the way the recipe says and liked it better with brown sugar, cutting the oil is just to make it "healthier".. its still just as moist!

Thanks Deborah.. I copied the idea from the photos on carrot cake III LOL, I guess I havent really tried to decorate a cake before, I mean about 3 months ago Eake was teaching me how to get the cake NOT to stick on the pan LOL (thank you parchment paper!) !! I do have to say that thanks to the exchange I have come a long way since when I first came on this site. I really didnt have anyone to ask the tecnical questions, and you have been so much help!.. Now I feel much more prepared for culinary school. Next mission: marshmallow fondant!.. need to find the right cake for it first :)

Honestly, it looks wonderful. I never thought to pipe carrots onto a carrot cake! I don't have any specific tips, but I look at other photos of cakes and I get some ideas from them. My decorating style is simple, there isn't anything wrong with that. You won't find me creating charcters, etc. anytime soon. Just play around the the piping tips and look at others photos. Goreous cake Katie! :)

Katie, don't be so hard on yourself! You did a great job! I am a professional cake decorator, been decorating cakes and candies for 37 years now. I have my own bakery/confections business. Everyone with a passion for baking/cooking has had to start at the beginning. The important thing is that you are following your passion and you are enjoying every minute of it. I can tell by reading what you share with us. Your passion and love not only for creating great food, but for the pleasure and joy your food gives to others is evident and what fuels your very passion for baking/cooking. This is what all great chefs, patissier, or home cooks share in common. The carrot cake is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Just as others have stated it is delicate and charming. A absolutely perfect 1st! Cake decorating is much more challenging then most people think it would be. I have taught the skill to a few people and they were quite surprised at how difficult it really is. It just takes practice, practice and more practice. My family and friends have reaped the benefits of lots of practice cakes and goodies over the years! ;) I just encourage you to keep going with it, it is quite evident you have a knack for it. (Your decorated Christmas cookies are wonderful!) And I have to add, Minnie is absolutely darling! I work at an animal hospital and have volunteered at a wild animal sanctuary for 9 years. I just LOVE animals! Especially the special needs ones. I have (had) 2 kitties, Popeye, who has only one eye and Tripod Bob (aka Bobble/Bob) who only had 3 legs. Sadly I just had to say "good-bye" to Bob and had to put him to sleep one week ago. He was only 3 1/2, had colon cancer. He was a sweet, sweet kitty that I miss terribly. Too short of a life, but very, very much loved.

That's were it starts. Keep practicing and before you know it your cakes with be right up there with the best of them. I hope you do better than I did. I had to practice so much that I gained weight eating lots of my not so nice trys! I bet your neighbor loved the cake you made for her! Good job!

You sure did better than I can do at the moment! I am also one of those persons who can bake anything but can't decorate to save my life (yet...lol) Keep it up girl, it is looking good.

I've started cake decorating about 3 months ago and I have to agree with judy, most people have no idea how difficult it is but if you have the passion, you'll do fine. I hate it when friends/family say " that shouldn't be too hard" yeah right, just let them try it. You may want to check out some cake decorating classes in your area. That would give you the basics and like judy said...practice...practice...practice! this is a great site but you may want to check out CakeCentral.com. You can get answers to any and all of your baking/decorating questions. Good Luck

I think you did a brilliant job of icing the cake and anyway I believe the taste of the cake is more important than the look of it....!!!

great icing.... i also never put frosting or icing, and my hubby wanted to make a b-day cake for my mom, drove me crazy. i told him if he wants to decorate a cake, he should do it, i'll have no part in it, no patience and no idea how to go about it... but your cake looks delish!

Thanks for the information on CakeCentral.com. My grand daughter of 13 yrs wants to learn to decorate cakes so we will start there. I remember watching my mom make wedding cakes as I grew up. She did it until my dad stopped quickly and smashed one all over the back of the car on the way to the church. What a day.

hey, that's pretty awesome for a first time. Most people don't realize that it's super difficult to even pipe a name on a cake if you've never done it before, and then it takes practice to make it look GOOD (I had to learn since I worked at a large ice cream chain). One of the biggest tips I was taught is that if you're REALLY wanting to learn, you can always use Crisco on an upturned cake pan to practice shapes, outlines and whatnot. It's super easy to clean and cheaper than using real icing :)

About Me
I am 24 years old and found a passion in cooking since I was just a little girl, but actually thought of making a future of it 2 years ago. There were years where I just wouldnt cook because I hated making a mess, but I love cooking and baking so much I really dont even care now if I make a mess LOL. I live in Santiago Chile and for the first 11 years of my life lived in the US. I am in culinary school now, making my dream come true :)
My favorite things to cook
All kind of cookies, muffins, cakes, breads anything sweet! Also japanese, mexican and italian food. And of course chilean food! I love to make everything from scratch! If I could make my own chocolate I would! I just love baking!!!, but am getting into cooking different kinds of food.. i also sell cookies and muffins, its kind of slow because its summer but maybe in winter it will be better :) Sweet stuff is my speciality
My favorite family cooking traditions
My interest in cooking began thanks to my mom. She has worked her whole life, even traveling 4 hours a day for years just to be able to give us a good education/feed us when we were kids. Now that she is spending more time home, she is cooking more! she is a great cook when it comes to home cooked meals.. I enjoy her meals and she enjoys mine.:D, a bit stubborn when it comes to our cooking methods and we are always questioning one another LOL!
My cooking triumphs
I must say i am getting better and better at cooking thanks to AR. i have made some cool things like sushi, alfredo lasagna roll ups with chicken and red bell pepper, some great cakes, brownies, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, homemade puddings, chili... im trying to make more impressive things.. but my oven doesnt help at all.. but as soon as i move out im going to buy a new oven! Also, I am the worse cake decorator! I am going to have to practice..
My cooking tragedies
I made a cupcakes from this site that didnt turn out at all :( My family said they were great but I could tell they werent when I saw they had only eaten 5 of the 40 cupcakes in one day.. normally things disappear in my house! Also, not knowing the first thing about melting chocolate, i did.. in the microwave, and it was very good, but i had to mess it up.. because I wanted more.. so I said, why not add a little butter? Not having butter, i took the cold "diet" type margarine out of the frige and put a tablespoon on it. mixed, and of course it seized.. it became as hard as a piece of taffy, so i started adding cold milk.. haha big mistake, it separated! finally i put it in a saucepan over low heat and heated it with a little bit more of milk. it was a good frosting! however, not very good for my peanut butter cups. the low part was hard like chocolate and the upper part was soft and fudgy, still good.. but funny i have a lot more, because i am very impacient in the kitchen! LOL
