I didn't have time to cook on Tuesday because I was busy meeting President Obama! When my niece called me on Sunday evening I was bursting with excitement but, for the most part, I had to keep the incredible news to myself. My wonderful niece, Liz Reiter, had arranged for my… MORE

About this Cook
A few years ago I had the opportunity to go to culinary school and loved every minute of it. So after nearly 20 years working as a paralegal, I recently took the plunge and changed careers. I was the baker at a "corporate dining" facility feeding the construction workers who are building a microchip manufacturing plant. I earned much less but I loved every minute of it - even though those minutes started at 5 AM! But when my previous employer called and offered to have me return as a real estate paralegal I had to accept the position because I have to support myself. I miss the baking job but not having to count every penny I spend. And now, eight months later, thanks to the extremely slow real estate market in upstate New York, I am once again unemployed. Oh well, that will give me lots of time to bake for fun and lots of time on the Recipe Buzz.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook anything but baking is my passion.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holiday meals with ALL the extras. Too much food for anyone to eat everything. I can't wait to pass the holiday traditions on to my granddaughters who are already Grandma's best helpers!
My cooking triumphs
I love the fact that even though our mother was a good cook and my five sisters are all good cooks, everytime I bring somethng new to family get-togethers, I am always asked to bring it again!
My cooking tragedies
My mother did a lot of cooking without recipes so I thought that's just what you did. One time when I was about 12, I was home alone and decided to make a pie. The crust was really not edible. Decades later, I still remember that pie!

Yankee Beans
Very, very good. I have two little girls who tend to be wary of new things but all of us enjoyed this tonight. I an an experienced cook but had never made beans from scratch before. I had the bone left over from our Easter ham and wanted to try something other than pea soup this time. I had left quite a bit of meat on the bone so this made a nice meal in a bowl for us. I'll make this again. Thanks for the recipe!

Shrimp Scampi ala Norelllaura
Mmmmmm! I volunteer as a cook at a local hospice. Today I asked one resident what he'd like and he was unsure. As soon as I suggested shrimp with garlic and butter, he was sure that's what he wanted. I gave this a try and it was fabulous! I omitted the red bell pepper and added some butter with the olive oil in the first step (fat and calories are not an issue with people in their final days!). Of course when they could smell the garlic and then the shrimp the employees and the other volunteer were drawn to the kitchen for a sample! It was unanimous - this recipe is a winner. Thank you, Laura, for bringing some enjoyment to dear Vincent. He won't be with us much longer but today he's eating well!

Best Brownies
I made these today at a hospice where I volunteer. They are delicious! I added walnuts and Hershey's Special Dark chocolate chips. I didn't frost them. I don't really care for frosting on brownies and the man I was making them for didn't want it either. The brownies were still a little gooey when I cut one after baking for 28 minutes but they were still quite warm and they had the chips. I am sure when they are cooled they will be perfect!
