Bourtheto

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
Very good! I found that four medium potatoes were more than enough, and the top-most potatoes didn't get cooked all the way through even with an extra 20 minutes of cooking. Next time I might cook the potatoes for a bit before putting in the fish, as the cod fillets made it harder to stir the stew. Still, a great recipe overall!

Bobotie

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2008
Very tasty! I used a lot of the suggestions other reviewers made, such as doubling the curry powder and eggs for the custard top. I left out the salt and sugar and used multigrain bread to make it slightly healthier, and used lamb for a more traditional foundation. I served it with the recommended yellow rice (turmeric, cinnamon and raisins,) which was also very good. It wasn't very filling (I had two slices and 1/4 cup of rice,) so it definitely needs side dishes to round out the meal.

Chicken Curry V

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2009
My family thinks this was the best curry we've had yet! I didn't have all the whole spices, so I substituted ground spices in many cases, and I had no tamarind. I also used a whole can of light coconut milk and served over red rice.

Pool Party Pasta Salad

Excellent salad! For a little more kick, I added a teaspoon of Italian spaghetti spice mix and a few cloves of garlic. It was very well received by my family!

Cauliflower and Tofu Masala

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2010
Very good! It's surprisingly spicy, considering how little hot stuff is in it, but that's just the way I like it!

Fig Smoothie

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2010
Fabulous! I used some very ripe bananas, unsweetened soy milk and high pulp orange juice, and it came out wonderfully thick and had just the right level of sweetness.

Shrimp and Catfish Gumbo

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2009
Wonderful gumbo! I just put everything in the pot and let it simmer for an hour and a half, which really let the catfish absorb the spices and flavors. My family was wary about the catfish at first but loved this recipe!

Vietnamese Beef Pho

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
An excellent recipe! I added some of the spices other reviewers mentioned (star anise, cloves, nutmeg) and it smelled just like restaurant pho while it was cooking. I wasn't able to cut my meat as thin as I wanted, and the broth didn't stay boiling long enough to fully cook the meat, but a minute in the microwave got the soup hot again and cooked the beef fully. I'll be glad when I can make this again!

Thai Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2009
A tasty meal! I had to spice it up a lot (tripled the curry powder, added some cayenne and fish sauce) but the end result was well-liked by my family.

Tasty, but definitely needed something. I added more spices and vegetables and my family liked it, though I felt it was a little bland.

Braised Green Beans with Fried Tofu

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2009
I skipped deep-frying the tofu and mixed it into the sauce (I used silken tofu for softness,) served it over black rice and it turned out great! My family isn't used to eating tofu, so they weren't sure about it at first, but they cleaned their bowls!

Vietnamese-Style Chicken Curry Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2009
Wonderful! I doubled the vegetables and coconut milk and took out the water, which made for a thicker soup/stew. I also cooked it for about an hour and a half to make sure the potatoes were soft. It went great with the recommended french bread!
