Last year I started doing infrequent "movie nights" with my children. They take turns picking out movies that they would like to watch, usually a newly released movie they haven't seen, but occassionally they will pick out a classic. I get them all bundled
up in their sleeping bags, which my crafty mom made for them out of cozy fleece, and they lay on the floor in front of the television propped up on a stack of pillows. I make them a special treat to munch on while they watch the movie. A few times I've gotten
creative and coordinated the snack with the movie. Last Christmas we watched
The Polar Express and I made hot cocoa, serving it to them at the appropriate time in the movie (when the "Hot, Hot" song is played). I find, especially in hard economic times, that this is cheaper than going out to the movies (it cost me $45 for 3 of
us to attend a matinee last week!!), and my kids LOVE these movie nights. They talk about them for weeks and beg me for another. They haven't said a word about the expensive trip to the theater.
Do you have anything special you do with your children? Also, I am open for new snack ideas or snack/movie combinations.
