I am an African (of Benin (Dahomean decent))American Indian (of Iroquois decent). I embrace both my African and my indigenous American Beninoir/ Iroquois culture. I am an artist. I play African hand drums…I draw, paint, sculpt, sew, crochet and love home decorating. I am also a graphic designer.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook autumn dishes, vegetarian, African dishes and indigenous American dishes. I also like to do vegetarian grilling and barbecuing.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Great Grand mother Lila Mae had a tradition of making every meal so grand and elaborate as though every day was thanksgiving. She cooked everything fresh. She went to the meat market for her meats, the bakery for her breads (if she didn't bake it herself), and a dairy store for her dairy products. She never went to the supermarket and never used canned, boxed or frozen products. She even ground her own beef.
My cooking triumphs
Although I was cooking since I was eight years old, my first year of marriage cooking for my husband did not win me any awards. but I learned fast how to prepare the types of foods he liked to eat.
My cooking tragedies
My worst cooking tragedy (other than dropping a whole pan of candied yams face-down on the floor as I was removing it from the oven on our first Thanksgiving together) During our first week of marriage, I tried to make chicken and dumplings but I made the dumplings so big that they climbed out of the pot.
