My name is Kristen. My boyfriend and I just bought our first house, fixed it up real nice and now we're enjoying our hard work.
A typical day for me starts with getting up at 5:30 and out the door to work by 7:00. I work for a non profit association doing marketing work (newsletter, magazine and Web site.) After work I head straight to 24 Hour Fitness where I love my kick boxing class! After the gym I head to the grocery store or home to start cooking for my honey. I usually make dinner in 40 minutes or less, enjoy the meal and Josh washes the dishes. I always try to make and extra two servings for lunch the next day. After dinner we might watch one of our favorite shows like: The Biggest Loser, Heroes or Top Chef. Or I work on my freelance marketing job...consulting for a night club in Sacramento. Many times we'll take our dog for an after dinner walk. Then it's off to bed by 10:00.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook quick healthy meals with lots of veggies and lean protein.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year my mom, sister and I get together a couple weeks before Christmas and we bake 20+ dozen cookies. We arrange them in gift platters for friends and neighbors.
My cooking triumphs
For the last three years I have won the West Coast guacamole making contest; coined as the Guac Off! I am known for making the best guacamole this side of the Rockies.
It was actually an official competition. Each year there are about 25 guacs entered in the contest. They are arranged on a long table, given the same tasting bowl as all the others and a number next to the bowl. There are about 100-150 judges who walk around the table and taste each guac. They vote for their favorite three and their least favorite. At the end of the evening the votes are tabulated and...I've won by a larger margin each time! In 2007 I was even featured on the Good Day Sacramento show the morning after the competition. :)
My cooking tragedies
I once dropped a pot holder in the oven and it caught on fire. I was so young that I just screamed and ran around the kitchen! Good thing my level-headed friend was there and grabbed the tongs to extinguish the flames in the sink!
Another tragedy... I love making stir fry... only I didn't quite know how to do it. I would cut up a mountain of veggies, cook some unseasoned chicken to a crisp and pour teriyaki sauce all over it. It was a noble attempt just out of the house right? I wasn't a starving college student! LOL
