Having one of my kids say "Dad, this is the best ____ ever." Or, my daughter cooking a birthday surprise for me and me managing to stay out of the kitchen most of the time even though it was killing me.
My cooking tragedies
Setting off the smoke alarm and getting visited by the fire department in my apartment twice- once cooking burgers for my mom and kids- once browning Italian sausage for a soup.

Chef John's Sausage & Shrimp Jambalaya
This was excellent, and perhaps better the second day. I prefer brown rice for almost every dish and this was no exception. It took about 50 minutes to get just right. My friend said this was the best jambalaya she has ever had. She said the rice wasn't "mush like in most jambalaya." I credit the brown rice for this.

Chef John's Chicken and Mushrooms
Really flavorful, tender chicken even though I used skinless breasts. I added a little soup base granules with the water to compensate for the lack of skin, since Chef John said the skin was essential to flavor. I used fresh shiitakes pre-sliced at the supermarket. This is the first time I have used a skillet in the oven so I had to go buy a stainless steel pan that was oven safe to 400. I thought it was silly that they felt compelled to warn me on the label that the handle would be hot when removed from the oven. Yet here I am soaking my fingers in an ice water bath because I forgot to use a mitt. Regardless, delicious dish and will make again with proper PPE.

Take The Night Off Slow Cooker Pineapple Chicken
My 13 y.o. turned his nose up at this, which is unusual. I thought it was okay but I think in the future I will go back to stir fry for my Chinese main courses.
