Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
I never knew I could cook until I found this turkey recipe (and the turkey brine recipe also on this site). Now I always make a delicious, moist, perfectly browned turkey. Be warned, if you serve this turkey for Thanksgiving, you'll be asked to host every year. I don't stuff it, instead use the Apple Pecan cornbread dressing (also on this website) for the perfect feast.

Turkey Brine

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
I will never again make a turkey without using this brining recipe! It's delicious; moist, perfectly browned and cooks faster than a turkey that isn't brined at all. Yummy!

Cranberry Sauce I

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
In my family, cranberry sauce is the last thing anyone wants from the Thanskgiving table. I love cranberries & vowed to make everyone else love them, too. This recipe is my base but I add one teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice while the berries are cooking. As it cools, I add 1/2 cup Grand Marnier and mix it in thoroughly. Don't wait until it cools completely or it'll be too strong for kids. But you also don't want to add it while it's hot or it'll just vaporize. Tinker with the amount & timing according to the guests at your table. You'll make cranberry sauce fans out of everyone, too!

Perfect Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
Sooooo easy and sooooo yummy! This is the only pumpkin pie I make each Thanksgiving. I've tried making special variations like pumpkin gingerbread pie; caramel apple pie; using a non-traditional graham cracker crust - don't do it. For Thanksgiving, you're not just baking dessert, you're recreating fond memories. Stick with the tried and true perfect pumpkin pie & you'll hear rave reviews from your guests. Don't skimp on the whipped cream either. This pie deserves fresh whipping cream & it only takes a few seconds to add vanilla & whip it up with a hand mixer. Leave the spray can and tub at the store.

Apple Pie III

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
This is my go-to apple pie each Thanksgiving, though I love it any time of year! I cheat & buy a pre-made crust because any short cut I can take during Thanksgiving, makes my life simpler. This is delicious and really is easy as pie.

Slow-Cooker Posole

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
I didn't care for this recipe at all. The meat wasn't savory, even though I browned it as the recipe required. The sauce just didn't do anything for me, either. However, I have to admit that I don't like menudo. I tried Posole instead because I was told it's similar to menudo but a better alternative for those who don't like tripe. It could be that I just don't care for the canned enchilada base. I'll look for an authentic sauce made from scratch & try it again.

Apple Pecan Cornbread Dressing

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2010
I can't prepare a Thanksgiving meal without this recipe. My first attempt yielded a dressing that was a little too sweet. I tweeked it by using sparkling apple cider instead of apple juice. I also switched to a tart apple, rather than a sweet variety. That made it perfect! Use a very moist, honey cornbread. A bland, dry one won't do. Double the recipe because your guests will take some home with them.

Jamie's Cranberry Spinach Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2009
This dressing is great. I made a delicious Thanksgiving dinner & served this salad with it. I got more compliments on the salad than I could count! I had to make several copies of the recipe for family members to take home. I'm making it again tomorrow for Christmas dinner with friends.

Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2009
This is my "go-to" mashed potato recipe. The roasted garlic is a nice surprise when guests are only expecting potatoes. I've also added a cup of fresh grated romano cheese before blending the hot potatoes so it melts into the recipe - OH, it's so good!

Sweet Corn Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2009
This is a yummy & simple recipe. I was half-way through baking it when I realized I forgot to add the water. The measuring cup was still sitting on the counter - yikes! I quadrupled the recipe for a dinner party & was minutes from serving it! Luckily, the recipe is idiot proof because it still came out delicious and moist, despite my mistake. Everyone at the party loved it & kept commenting how they've only ever had it at Mexican restaurants - assuming it must have been difficult to make. Ha!

Sopapilla Cheesecake

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2009
I have to admit, this was a strange recipe to prepare. It seemed like cheating using a canned pastry & was too simple to seem special enough for a Christmas dinner party. I bought a "back up" dessert - just in case. What was I worried about? After slicing into squares, I tasted what was left on the knife...uh, yummy! That carmelized cinnamon crust was delicious and who doesn't love cheescake? I had doubled the recipe but wished it was quadrupled. Everyone at the party went back for seconds or thirds. My husband bagged a couple & put them in the 'frige so he'd have leftovers the next day. My family asked for the recipe & chouldn't wait to make them after I admited how easy they were.
