The journey of becoming a better cook

Why oh why?

Why oh why do I have to put my spin on recipes on the "allrecipes" site?  I choose a recipe because it sounds great and I have all the ingredients on hand. But still I find myself doing this to most recipes. I think the recipes I do this to the most are soups. Always adding kale or spinach to make it more hearty, more like a stew. Adding nuts or chocolate chips to baked goods or putting cheese in a recipe to add more flavor. Is this a disease(LOL) or am I alone?

um...you are not alone! I have messed up countless perfectly good recipes. I almost always can't bring myself to add the full amount of sugar called for in a baking recipe!

There is this silly beast called personality that always wants to stick its oar in and stir things up. Soupy, who told you that's a bad thing? I can feel cici too in that sometimes is seems that a recipe calls for too much of something (and truth be told I did try one recipe for carrot cake with stellar reviews, I showed utmost fidelity to the recipe, and nearly went into diabetic shock - in fact the only thing I couldn't taste in the carrot cake was the carrot...) Life is all about putting our spin on things. Adding that personal note that will elevate a good recipe we've discovered to a family tradition passed down for generations. Sure at times our intervention may not have the desired result - but so what? Try, try again. I saw a lovely film that illustrates that, "The Ramen Girl" with Brittany Murphy (RIP) playing an American who has been stranded in Hong Kong and decides that her destiny is to master the mysteries of ramen... It is a silly fairy tale but it reaffirms the message that cooking is yet another route to the soul!

Soupy-this is called the Tweaking Disease. There are a lot of us here on AR who just have to tweak a recipe. Zeebee on the buzz, always asks the question-"What are you tweaking this week? "

About Me
I like to try to create new recipes for cooking and baking contest. I am a certified dialysis technician I am married to a great guy who is my best friend. We have a camp in Newport Maine and we enjoy spending as much time there as possible.
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook or bake most anything except fish. I am not great at all recipes but the best things I make are soups and stews. I like to try new things. I love to read everyones reviews because it helps me to avoid some of the mistakes they have made.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every Thanksgiving we spend at my sister-in-laws house. We always bring a ham and some kind of appetizer. This year they invited my dad to go with us.He would have been alone due to my passing two monthes earlier and my sister traveling to see her son. He had a great time and will come from now on.
My cooking triumphs
My triumph is that I have finally aloud my husband to cook in the kitchen. I am always afraid of what he would make for us to eat. Turns out he is a pretty good cook and we have a great time cooking together.
My cooking tragedies
My bread making never seems to come out right. Usually come out very hard and doesn't rise. I hope to conquer this some day.
