Pizza Dough I

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2009
Very easy and quick. The crust is a thinner style crust which I really like. This recipe is a keeper and I don't need to search any further for a good pizza dough recipe. Will try adding some herbs the next time.

Indian Naan II

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2009
This naan is just as good as any I've had from a restaurant or from a grocery store. Made a few changes for convenience and based on the experiences of others. Started it in bread machine on dough setting, used oil rather than ghee, and I made finger marks in the dough before frying them in a hot pan on top of the stove. Was so easy and so delicious! Will never buy naan again. I don't need to! Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Chicago-Style Pan Pizza

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2009
Used an easy pizza dough recipe from this site and the rest of the recipe as is. It was wonderful. No leftovers! That says it all. The fennel is an important ingredient. That's what took this recipe over the top for me. Thanks for sharing this recipe. A keeper.

Spinach Brownies

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2009
The first time I made these I used spinach and they were excellent. The next time I didn't have spinach so used swiss chard (the red and green type). It was delicious with the chard too but looked even better because of the colours. I will definitely make these again.

Tender Italian Baked Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 22, 2009
This was really easy and the chicken turned out very very moist. This is a five star recipe for me with this change. Reduced the parmesan cheese to 1/4 cup and that was just right for my taste. As suggested by a reviewer, I baked the chicken on a rack so it wasn't soggy on the bottom. Turned chicken over after 10 minutes. Also, prepped the chicken by pounding and making it an even thickness. Thanks for this one. It's a keeper.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2009
No doubt about it. This recipe beats every lasgna recipe I've ever tried. Used some of the suggestions of reviewers (added nutmeg to the ricotta, used diced tomatoes, fresh basil and fresh parsley). Served this after it had been in the fridge for a day or two. Think that helped to blend the flavours nicely. Have never been a big fan of lasagna, but this is in a league by itself. Will definitely make this again and in our house when someone says "it's good enough for company" I know that it's a top rated dish. Thanks John for this great recipe.

Quick and Easy Alfredo Sauce

Reviewed: Mar. 27, 2009
Followed the recipe precisely. It's very easy to make. Excellent flavour and consistency. This is a very versatile sauce. Added sundried tomatoes and spinach and served on penne. Also used it as a sauce for pizza and used spinach, mozzarella and chicken for toppings. It was an excellent dish too. This recipe makes a lot. I used this amount for the above two dishes and still have some left over. Really beats store bought. Thanks for this excellent recipe.

Basic Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2009
I thought I had the recipe for the perfect pie crust until I tried this one. I have used this for a single crust pie and it worked out exceptionally well. It was very very flaky. I used the food processor to combine the dry ingredients with the shortening. Then put mixture in a bowl and added the water. I skipped chilling the dough and it still worked out fine and was easy to work with. I made a single cooked crust (for a lemon pie). I lined the crust with foil and used beans to weight it down. The end result was a perfect crust. Made the lemon pie that I was craving and topped it with a meringue recipe from this site. The end result was amazing.

Scalloped Potatoes and Onions

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2009
I've made scalloped potoatoes for many years and thought that they were always quite good. For once I tried a recipe. This one was a big hit and very easy. Only thing I changed was the cooking time. They were done in about 1 hour and 15 min. If I had left them in for the full two hours they would have been mush. Less time made them just right. My husband has declared that he doesn't eat potatoes. When he saw this dish he tried some and came back for seconds. This one is a keeper in my books. Thanks.

Mustard Sauce for Ham

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2009
This sauce is to ham what icing is to a cake. It gave it the finishing touch. Made half a batch and there was lots. Didn't have tarragon vinegar so I used cider vinegar and it was still very good. Gave it four starts because I adapted the recipe. I'll always serve this sauce with ham in the future. It was a big hit and very easy to make.

Nutty Apple Crisp

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2009
Served this to five older men tonight. I'm sure all of them had eaten Apple Crisp many many times. They all were very impressed with this recipe. Two changes were made to the original recipe. I added 2 tsp. of cinnamon and topped with slivered almonds since I didn't have walnuts. The lemon really makes a difference. Almost forgot, at the last minute I discovered that I'd left out the water. Just said "oh well", let's see how it turns out without it. There were comments about how the nutmeg really added something to this dish. This is an inexpensive delicious dessert. I will definitely make it again. Bonus is that it's so easy.

Irish Soda Bread I

Reviewed: May 18, 2009
To me a reason for giving 5 stars is that I will make this recipe again. That's the case with this soda bread. Have made it more than once now and it seems to evaporate into thin air. This batch got an excellent rating from an Irish friend who knows more about soda bread than I do. For my latest batch, I wrapped the loaves in a damp tea cloth while they were hot. This made a moister crust which I prefer. Easy, inexpensive and yummy. Try it toasted!

Rhubarb Custard Pie II

Reviewed: May 18, 2009
This pie was a big hit but I gave it a 4 star rating because I reduced the sugar to 1.5 cups. Would have been much too sweet with more. Next time I will reduce the vanilla just a bit. I think it's needed to cut the bite of the rhubarb a bit, but was a bit too much. Definitely will use this recipe again. My husband says that his grandmother made the best rhubarb custard pie ever. Well, move over granny... I'm ready for the challenge and I think with this recipe and the two changes I mentioned I'll have the blue ribbon.

Barbecue Chicken Casserole

Reviewed: May 18, 2009
I've used this recipe more times than I can count. It's about time I rated it. Definitely five stars. I like using this recipe when I have company because it can be prepared in advance so no fussing around while the company is here. I've never added the corn simply because we seldom eat corn. Still was excellent. The corn would add a contrast in colour. I always use boneless skinless chicken thighs and they work really well. Bon appetit!

World's Best Cookie

Reviewed: May 25, 2009
These cookies were too dry for my taste. I cooked them for 12 minutes. The real test for me of how to rate a recipe is whether or not I would make it again. I'll pass on this one and keep on looking for that perfect cookie recipe.

Seasoned Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2009
These were great. I only had 1 pound of turkey so I scaled the spices down. Cut back a bit on the onion soup mix as I try to take it easy with salt. I thought that the mixture was a bit wet so I added some crushed crackers. In the end they were fantastic and have had a request to make them instead of hamburgers in the future. Very flavourful. Thanks for posting this recipe.

Oma's Rhubarb Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2009
Will definitely make this again. Very moist and tasty. Used 1 tsp. of cinnamon in the topping but would add more next time. Had compliments about the crunchy topping but I found it a bit sweet. I'll tinker with that the next time I make it. Still it's a five star recipe for sure.

Potluck Chicken Casserole

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2009
This recipe gets 5 stars by me because I would make it again and would serve it to guests. Noted some of the suggestions by other reviewers. Added about 1/4 cup of chicken broth to the sauce. No problems with the casserole being too dry. Also, the crunch of the celergy really added something to this dish. Used a whole onion (a small one) as suggested by a reviewer. Next time will try adding a bit of paprika to step up the flavouring. But even without that, it was very good. The cornflake topping added something for eye appeal and a bit of crunch too. Nice change to not use canned soup for a casserole and avoid too much salt. This recipe goes in my "keepers" file. Thanks.

No rave reviews at our dinner table. Was hoping that it would be a hit because it's so easy, but it was just so-so.

Imitation Crabmeat Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2009
I used less Italian dressing than asked for because of comments in the reviews. Turned out really well. Was even better after sitting for a day in the fridge. I'll definitely make this again. Four stars because I changed the recipe a bit. I save five stars for results after doing the recipe exactly as is. Thanks for this one.
