I'm an Englishwoman living in Canada with two sometimes picky children to cater for (and husband who is long-sufferingly willing to try anything). I'm adapting well to the change of country, although still hanker after UK dairy products on a regular basis (and Twiglets!).
My favorite things to cook
I love yeast cookery and am always looking for new savoury or sweet bread recipes to try out. I'm also a big fan of 'proper puddings' - sticky toffee/bread and butter/summer puddings for example. Fond of winter warming foods like stews and soups. I grow a lot of my own veg, so also need glut-busting recipes on occasion.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I always make a Christmas pudding and Christmas cake, usually in October. Also tend to make my own mincemeat and mince pies (the sweet kind) a bit closer to Christmas. Hot cross buns are another staple, come Easter. You wouldn't guess I'm an atheist, would you?
My cooking triumphs
Spent about three days in April 2008 making a traditional English Cream Tea for a St. George's Day party. So much cream and pastry. Still wondering why none of the guests suffered a heart attack after that...
My cooking tragedies
The Christmas pudding of 2007 comes to mind. I left it steaming for the requisite six hours, then forgot about it. Of course it boiled dry and the plastic container melted horribly all over my lovely steamer, filling the house with acrid smoke. Luckily the dog woke me up before it got even worse.
