About this Cook
I am a busy stay-at-home mom to my three little lovebugs and wife to my hubby of 8 years. I am a jewelry designer and sometimes seamstress where I design custom handcrafted jewelry and unique pillow covers: http://www.etsy.com/shop/DesignsbyALY. I love cooking, reading, pilates, yoga, running, the summer-time and I just recently started gardening with some success.
My favorite things to cook
I love anything bbq and seafood related. I also love cooking recipes given to me by my mom because it reminds me of my childhood. I'm not such a good baker per say, but I enjoy making desserts - especially anything with chocolate! I like all types of food from all over the world, and I usually try to make a whole dinner (entree, side and maybe even dessert) if I can from a different country at least once a month.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving without a doubt is my favorite time of the year. Since I was 15 years old, my cousin and I have made Turkey Day Dinner. Its a time for our parents and grandparents to relax and has become a big "cousin" dinner thing which now includes my two sisters, and an additional 3 cousins plus our spouses (all in our mid 20's - early 30's now)! We usually have about 30 people at dinner and it's always chaotic and crazy but we always have tons of fun planning the menu and trying to out do our excellent meal from the prior year.
My cooking triumphs
I remember the first time I made dinner for my family - I must have been 14 or so. I made chicken dumplings and a chocolate cake with ganache icing. My mom still talks about that dinner. It really was fabulous. I lost the chicken dumpling recipe after that dinner and have never been able to duplicate it!
My cooking tragedies
Too many to list, but it just makes me better at it the next go round!

Puttanesca I
Such a simple, delicious dish! I was literally racking my brain about what I could make for dinner at 6pm tonight. This dish was done and on the table within 40 minutes. I used the entire 2oz can (drained) of anchovies which I chopped in a mini food processor with the greek olives (I got a Greek olive medley at Costco which had just been sitting in my fridge). I didn't have any capers, so unfortunately I had to skip those, but next time I'll definitely add them. I also used maybe 1/8 cup of olive oil for personal preference. Really tasty, slightly salty and slightly spicy - all over a dish I'll make again. Thank you :)

Breakfast in Bangkok
So Good - we usually make a drink like this without the coconut milk and it's one of our favorite juicing staples! The coconut milk made it over the top yummy. Unfortunately today I couldn't find our fresh Ginger (go figure!), so I had to do without and it was still delicious. Next time, I'll make sure to add it. BTW, I always juice my ginger with my other veggies/fruits too.

Homemade Butter
The best! I had some heavy cream left over from Holiday Baking/Cooking that I didn't want to just throw out. I came across this recipe and faintly remembered making homemade butter in kindergarten and how extremely delicious it was. I am so glad I made this! It's so much more flavorful that regular butter from the store, and the fact that it is fresh and homemade... Bonus!! Just make sure you rinse the butter well after draining off the liquid (keep the liquid for any recipe asking for buttermilk) or else your butter will go rancid and from what I've read, adding salt helps the butter "keep" as well. I knew I wanted to make something to go with this butter right away, so I made J.P's Big Daddy Biscuits also from this site. My eyes literally rolled into the back of my head - a match made in heaven!! Thank you!
