Baingan Bharta (Eggplant Curry)

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2012
This was a very good version of this dish. If you like bharta, I think you'll really like it. Good testure, good flavors. I did substitute 1/2 tbsp grated ginger and 1/2 tbsp minced garlic for the garlic/ginger paste. I did not use the garam masala substitution. This recipe may be a 5, but since my personal preferences rated it a 3 (I would rather have mushroom curry), I couldn't give it the 5 star rating.

Curried Zucchini Soup

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2012
NOTE: We substituted veggie broth to make it vegetarian. Very good. Simple and reasonably quick. True medium spice level. With another flavor layer it would be 5 star. I may try adding coconut milk to it... Quality of curry powder is critical. UPDATE: On our second try at this recipe we added chili powder. We enjoyed the added spice complexity. We still haven't tried a coconut milk variation.

Spicy Banana Curry

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2012
Rich and flavorful. Made verbatim. Mild to Medium spice level depending on your personal heat tolerance. I wouldn't sit down and eat a platter of it like a 5-star dish, but as a member of a medley, family-style dinner, it is very good. We originally garnished per the illustration - a banana slice with some coconut. On the second serving, we garnished more liberally with bananas (three angled slices per serving)and it made a positive impact. Food for thought...

Herbed Mushrooms with White Wine

Reviewed: May 3, 2013
Very good. This dish is simple, quick and easy. Made it EXACTLY per recipe (which colors my opinions regarding other reviews). Complexity/Depth of flavor are my requirements for 5 stars, and I would not say that this dish satisfies that in either case. That being said, it is still a very good side dish. Showstopper? No. But, if you like mushrooms, you'll definitely enjoy this and you'll get no complaints at your dinner party!

Roasted Sweet Potato Corn Chowder

Reviewed: May 5, 2013
I mis-read the instructions and added the roasted sweet potatoes too early... and it still was excellent. I think I had 4 bowls the first day. Nice, lightly sweet and savory flavor. I tried adding Cholula to my second bowl (I like some zip) and it didn't work. On my 3rd bowl I added tobasco. That really added a nice zing too it.

Gazpacho

Reviewed: May 6, 2013
In our opinion this was better than the recipe done by America's Test Kitchen (hence the 5-star). We followed the recipe exactly. If I was making it again for myself, I would add a chopped jalepeno, but I am a heat-lover... I did try adding some tobasco to one of my servings, but it was a fail. It just didn't blend well with the other flavors. I did note that the heat level of the tobasco was enhanced, so be aware if you are going to try to spice it up a bit that your results may exceed expectations.
