Pan de Muertos (Mexican Bread of the Dead)

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2011
I made this last year for Day of the Dead/Halloween/Samhain celebration and I think I'll make it again this year. The anise and orange flavor is not something I get everyday, and it has a dry, coffee-cake or panatone like texture and is just slightly sweet from the glaze. Good for breakfast with coffee or Mexican hot chocolate. I made it into a skull shape, poking in eye sockets and cutting a nose and teeth with scissors before I baked it.

Black Magic Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2010
I made this for my boyfriend's birthday this year and it was soooo good. I coated it with chocolate ganache and it was super dark and chocolaty.

Chocolate Ganache Icing

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2010
I knocked off a star because I had to tweak the technique a bit to get it to come out right. I brought the butter and heavy cream to a boil, then took it off the heat and added the chocolate, letting the heat from the cream melt the chocolate gently, and then added Kaluha instead of brandy. Since I was frosting a layer cake, I let the ganache cool, then refrigerated it. Then I whipped it in my stand mixer to make a light, fluffy frosting. Then I didn't have enough to cover my cake! I had to make a second batch, but didn't have time to cool it again, so I used the fluffy frosting to fill the middle of the cake, the poured the warm ganache over the whole thing. The good news is after all that work, it turned out DELICIOUS.

Barbara's Golden Pound Cake

Reviewed: May 2, 2009
This recipe looks pretty close to the classic pound cake recipe, which if I remember correctly, had a pound each of eggs, butter, flour, and sugar with no baking powder. I can see why someone wouldn't like it. It's denser, drier, and less sweet than your typical cake mix cake, but I like it. It's really good topped with fresh berries and whipped cream. I bet it would go with a lot of different toppings and flavorings.

Best Ever Chocolate Cutout Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2008
I've had tastier cookies, but these work great if you want black cookies to decorate for Halloween. They have a plain cocoa flavor like an oreo, but they look great! I halved the batch but still used a whole egg, so that might have helped keep them chewy. For a full batch I would use two eggs instead of one. I made these with half a batch of plain sugar cookies, and then made black cats out of the chocolate cookies and ghosts out of the sugar cookies. The chocolate dough is a little sticky, so be sure to keep it cold and use lots of cocoa powder dusted on the board. And be careful not to overbake them since you won't see any color change. The dark cookies look really striking with any decorations you put on top.
