About this Cook
I'm a young stepmom of two, ages 4 and 9. I grew up mostly overseas and had a mother who always cooked (and sometimes had to be very creative!!), so my brother and I learned our way around the kitchen at an early age. I've cooked for friends ever since getting my first apartment in college. Now cooking time is also bonding time with the kids, who like to help me. I involve them in every way I can, which is sometimes challenging with the 4-year old, and I'm so grateful to my mother for passing down her skills. I never understood what a fantastic family activity it was before I became a mom.
My favorite things to cook
My #1 comfort food is a variation of Swiss Steak: pan-seared cutlets smothered in onions and peppers in a rich tomato sauce served over mashed red potatoes.

Mexican Bean Salad
Loved it! I made this for a party and received tons of compliments. The only modification I made was using half a red onion versus a whole one. Following the suggestions of other reviewers, I also used a can of corn (drained) instead of frozen.

Tomato-Curry Lentil Stew
This was great! I more/less quadrupled* the recipe to have enough for the family, and everyone loved it... including the kids! Absolutely fantastic, and we'll definitely do it again. *I used a 1-pound bag of lentils and multiplied other ingredients except the celery and garlic accordingly. Two ribs of celery plus a fistful of leaves was sufficient, and I didn't dare throw in more than four garlic cloves. Results were outstanding!
