Gluehwein

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2012
A bit bitter but that could have been the cheap cask wine I used.

Truly Delicious Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2012
Nice to have a different way of doing Brussels sprouts. They definitely needed more than 2 min though.

Steak and Ale Pie with Mushrooms

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2011
Good. Added carrots and beans. Also used 2 bottles pale ale (and a bit of water) because not enough liquid. Used thyme, basil and oregano.

Pastry for Double Pie-Crust

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2011
Delicious. Used butter from fridge, mixed with fingers and then fork to get consistency, added cold water from fridge (a bit more than called for). Stirred with spoon, formed ball, dusted with flour and left 30 min. Rolled out, poked holes in bottom but prob not necessary. Filled with mix, topped with more pastry, brushed with milk. Toasted nicely and was delicious.

Eileen's Spicy Gingerbread Men

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2011
Definitely not to my taste. Too ... something. Spicy? Salty? Too much cloves? Too much molasses flavour and not enough sugar? I would definitely add more sugar as one review suggested if I make them again. No one in the family liked them. Although, I did find one or two people who did genuinely seem to like them. Most found them overpowering, however.

Turnip Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2011
This was delicious and a hit with my family. It is a forgiving recipe so add whatever vegetables you have leftover. I cooked up more carrots just for it because I like a lot of veg. Also threw in stuffing to get rid of it :-). As well, I have added a leftover broccoli cheese thing to good results. To balance the extra ingredients I just add more eggs and seasoning. I don't think you can overdo it with the eggs so if in doubt add it. I haven't yet tried it with the cinnamon sprinkled on (my family is not very adventurous with new things) but I'm looking forward to it.

Fluffy Pancakes

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2011
Very good. Left out the butter as one person suggested and still fluffy (and, dare I say, now healthy?). Soured the buttermilk a bit longer than the 5 minutes suggested. Served 3 with a bit of thawed fruit. Next time will try leaving the batter after mixing to thicken more.

After-Thanksgiving Turkey Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2010
Made it with home-made turkey broth. First sauteed garlic, onion and celery. Carrots were added when the first three were soft. Added about 3 or 4 Tbsp of flour. Then added leftover gravy and slowly added the turkey broth. Finished by adding the turkey and the rice. Good with either brown or white. Season as required.

Double Tomato Bruschetta

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2010
Very tasty as followed. We couldn't find sun-dried tomatoes in oil so we used dried. Left it sitting all afternoon and put it on toasted whole-wheat baguette.

Mushroom and Spinach Ravioli with Chive Butter Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2010
Easy to follow. When using regular flour make sure you knead it enough (I did 40 min to be on the safe side). Let it sit for at least 30 min (mine sat 90 min.) Also make sure to roll it super-thin. Also took the suggestion to add spinach (wilted in water). Didn't have regular cheese so added a bit extra parm.

Good base as others have noted. Paired it with the ravoili recipe and added chives garlic and parsley. Yum. We also make it with canola oil instead of butter.

Scalloped Potatoes and Onions

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
Left out the mayo because I didn't have any. Did half the dish as scalloped potato and half as scalloped broccoli and cauliflower. The latter side was delicious. Highly recommend trying. Both were yummy.

Connie's Zucchini "Crab" Cakes

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
Delicious. Subbed the Old Bay seasoning for celery salt and it worked. Ran out of celery salt and have never quite perfected the spices since (I use pepper, salt, cayenne, mixed herbs, paprika and a bit of garlic). I used the baking method as well to keep it healthy. Great as veggie burgers too.

Syrian Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
Not bad but keeps turning out a bit tough and chewy. Could be because I don't have a bread maker. Tried using less water but to no avail. It is still good though and does puff up nicely.
