About this Cook
Cooking is one of the most relaxing and creative things I do. I love to make a bunch of sides and soup early in the week, things I can easily use during the week, after a long day at work.
My favorite things to cook
I love roasted vegetables, whole grains, hearty soups and Penzey spices! I use recipes as a springboard, a place to start....and I have fun taking it from there.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Lots of good memories of cooking holiday meals with my best friend and her family over the years. The traditional shrimp dip gets put together at 10 in the morning, reason enough to pour our first glass of wine. One must cook with wine.
My cooking triumphs
One of my triumphs was being the "first on the block" to roast a Thanksgiving Turducken four years ago. Perfect.
My cooking tragedies
It's a long story that involved an exploding Pyrex dish of stuffing. Glass blew ten feet across the room, leaving shards in the adjoining dishes of gravy, mashed potatoes and cranberries. We were spared injuries as we had just turned away to refill our wine glasses. Always, always drink wine while cooking. The life you save may be your own.

Cookie Dough Hummus
This was one surprising recipe! I would recommend adding a couple tablespoons of chopped raisins to the hummus after it's gone through the food processer. Next time I'm going to stir in some chopped walnuts as well. I used less pb and no oil in order to save a few calories. I used plain old fashion rolled oats instead of instant. The most important instruction would be to make ahead of time and chill well. At room temperature it's still a little "beany", but refrigeration takes care of that and allows the flavors to meld. We loved this as a dip for apple slices.

Lucie's Vegetarian Chili
This was better than I expected! I left out the bell pepper, mushrooms and red wine because I didn't have them on hand. Otherwise followed the recipe exactly, including the lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce which I was skeptical about. In the end, I'd say to be sure to include these two items and they added a flavor element that "brightened" the rest of the dish. We loved it! I know it will freeze well, so this one will be a staple in our packed lunches.

Creamy Roasted Parsnip Soup
This just tastes like a great big ol' bowl of autumn. So, so, so good. I did make one change to the recipe in that I used ham base rather than chicken base, but other than that I followed to a T. I'm not a big fan of allspice, but once the soup had a chance for all the flavors to meld, it was perfect. I served with little pieces of toasted french bread with parmesan cheese broiled on the toast. Take a chance on a new recipe, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one.
