Pseudo Sourdough for the Bread Machine

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2011
Enjoyable loaf of bread. Like others have already mentioned, despite the title, I detected no hint of sourdough flavor. If you disregard the somewhat misleading recipe title, then the loaf itself works as directed and tastes very good. It has a bright white color with a soft texture and slightly crusty exterior.

Maple Roast Turkey

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2003
Delicious recipe. Mine took a bit longer to reach the proper temperature, but was worth the wait. This is the second year in a row I have made this recipe with tasty results. The flavor of the butter really makes this recipe special.

Baja Stuffed Potatoes

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2002
I thought these were amazing! There were just a bit spicy, but not overpowering. For children, you could easily use regular Monterey Jack cheese instead of the kind with the hot peppers. These were fairly easy to make and really have a delicious taste. They also look nice when they come out of the oven. Great BBQ fare!

Ashley's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2002
This recipe is excellent! The measurements and directions are so precisely accurate - I was thrilled to finally have a cookie that tasted terrific and also came out with a perfect color, texture, and shape. A definite winner!

Basil Chicken over Angel Hair

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2002
I didn't find this to be a bad dish by any means, but it was also not as special and the numerous reviews seemed to indicate. I used all fresh ingredients and did not add anything additional. I think it could have used more garlic, more moisture, more zip. My child refused to eat this. If you read over the reviews for this dish, you may notice that many of those who especially loved this dish either added some additional ingredients or used canned tomatoes.

Easy Pavlova

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2002
This was such an easy recipe to follow! The pavlova came out delicious and beautiful. I was skeptical of the fast time it took to cok the pavlova - many other recipes call much longer. However, this turned out wonderfully and it goes in to my family recipe box. Thanks for a great recipe!

Potato Rosemary Rolls

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2001
These were just OK, nothing bad but nothing special either. I expected more rosemary flavor. These were surpisingly bland, although very easy to make and beautiful. However, my 6-year old loved them.

Garlic Green Beans

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2001
I thought these were delicious, even if my family wouldn't touch them. It really helps to have a garlic peeler handy - there are a lot of garlic cloves to peel, which made me give a lower quickness rating. These are otherwise very easy to make - plan on 10 minutes for sauteeing the garlic, another 10 for heating the beans. Good enough for company. If you want to lower the fat content, I think you could easily reduce the amount of oil in the recipe. I will only use 1 Tbsp. next time.

Swedish Pancakes

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2001
This are delicious. If you have ever had the Swedish pancaes at IHOP, then these taste an awful lot like them. I could not get lingonberries, so I used some red currant jelly instead on the side. These were so easy and I'd serve them to holiday guests - they'd never realize how quick and easy these are to prepare. Yum Yum Yum!

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2001
Well, this is a very easy to fix turley recipe and definietly one to try again. However, the time alotted for cooking is definitely way off - I had a 14 1/2 pounder that cooked much, much faster than I expected - my bird was 2 1/2 pounds larger than the recipe called for and was done before 3 1/2 hours were up. I wish I had checked the bird earlier - I never dreamed it would be ready so quickly. This was the first year I had to rush around to get the fixings done on time while the turkey waited. Usually, I'm still waiting for the turkey and my fixings are all sitting on the table! I'd recommend checking your bird after 2 hours and every 1/2 after that until it is done.

Cranberry, Sausage and Apple Stuffing

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2001
Excellent, easy, and delicious. I did use the leeks - and three large leeks measured out to the 6 cups. I was worried about the large amount of leeks in the recipe, but they were an excellent addition to the recipe and cooked down considerably. I did use turkey sausage as the recipe submittor suggested. I also used dried cherries instead of cranberries. About 3/4s of a 1-pound loaf of white bread produced 12 cups of bread cubes called for in the recipe, which I toasted briefly in my oven as it preheated. This looked elegant on the table - very impressive. I baked it alone, rather than stuffing my bird, so I used just a bit extra chicken broth.

Downeast Maine Pumpkin Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2001
This was very good. It is not overly spiced and is quite moist. I baked this recipe in two regular size loaf pans and it turned out fine, although cooked longer (1 hour 20 minutes was the total time baking). I have another recipe that is even better, but this is still a very good recipe.

Blueberry Cream Muffins

Reviewed: May 22, 2001
I have finally found a great recipe for blueberry muffins with this recipe. These came out so soft and light - very, very good. I have been trying all of the blueberry muffins on this site, and this is the best one. I halved the recipe and they still worked out great. (Note:I used unthawed frozen blueberries and added an extra half cup of them to boot, which added about 10 minutes extra cooking time)

Apple Kuchen

Reviewed: May 15, 2001
I was very disappointed in this recipe. The apples did not get soft enough in the 35 minutes, so I had to keep baking another 5 minutes and check - it took 15 additional minutes before the apples were tender. Of course, with the added cooking time, the crust turned black on the bottom. The taste was good, but not excellent. I think real butter rather than margarine would taste better. I also think I would thinly slice the apples rather than wedge them. I will try this again only because there were previously 8 positive reviews and with these alterations, perhaps it will be better next time. It looks beautiful when it comes out of the oven and was very easy to prepare, especially it you have an apple peeler and a wedger. One more note: I think you could leave out the cocnut from the crust - I could barely taste it.

Pollo Fajitas

Reviewed: May 6, 2001
My family enjoyed this recipe. My husband thought it could use more zest, however. I used a food slicer to get my veggies nice and thin, which really made the recipe cook quickly. I will make this again, but I will add more seaonings to "kick it up another notch."

Creamy Banana Bread

Reviewed: May 4, 2001
Tihs is really delicious - very different from the usual banana bread. Creamy is a very accurate description. I will make this recipe again often. Since the recipe makes two loaves, I made one loaf with the nuts and the other without nuts and just sprinkled the cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Both ways, it is delicious!

Barbequed Marinated Flank Steak

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2001
Well, I thought the marinade was very tasty and I will probably use the marinade again for any steak cuts. Our flank steak was good, but not as spectacular as I had expected based on the reviews. I remember the taste from my childhood - it tastes very similar to a recipe my parents used in the 70s. Next time I will try broiling the meat instead of grilling.

Apple, Avocado and Hearts of Palm Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2001
This was OK, but nothing special. The dressing, which is like 1000 Island dressing, was fine, but did not go well with the apples and the Hearts of Palm. The dressing has too much mayo, I think - it was a bit overpowering. However, the dressing was good as a dip for the avocado slices.

Mexican Rice II

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2001
I already had enchiladas baking when I realized I had forgtotten to make rice. I found this recipe and made it based on the ease of preparation. I was quite pleasantly surprised! What a very good recipe for Mexican rice - and a very quick and easy recipe to boot. I will make recipe regularly when preparing Mexican meals from now on. Delicious!

Raspberry White Chocolate Muffins

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2001
My family really enjoyed these muffins. They puffed up nicely, although they got a little dark on the sides and bottoms - watch them carefully as they bake and I'd even check them a few minutes earlier than the time given. They are not as sweet as most muffins, but they are light and creamy in texture. I think these would be even better served as a loaf and spread with some sweetened raspberry butter. I added 1 tsp. vanilla but otherwise followed the recipe precisely.
