Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2012
Excellent recipe! I followed it 99% exactly as written. The only thing I did differently was I did not add all of the dry ingredients at once. I added in 3 increments, just mixing in after each addition. I used a melon baller to scoop the dough with. The cookies came out light & puffy, not flat at all. More like little domes that are exactly as promised: crispy around the edges and chewy in the center. The flavor can't be beat!

Flavor too strong. Alfonso did not like at all and I was not crazy for it. A bit dry too.

Pecan Turtle Bars

These were rock hard and not at all chewy....unless I did something wrong, which I don't think I did. Also, extremely sweet.

Drunken Peachanero Salsa

Very good! I doubled the peaches (used only canned) and reduced the tequila & habanero, but it was not too spicy. Could use full amounts next time.

Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2012
Pretty good. I used mozzarella (all I had on hand) and it was still good. I bet cheddar would be awesome. For the bread I used English Muffin Loaves from this site.

English Muffin Loaves

I used 5-1/4 cups of flour. Came out great.......lots of nooks and crannies! Good taste. Bland, but not in a bad way. Very easy to make.

Awesome Egg Salad with a Kick

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2012
Very good! I halved the amount of dijon & horse radish to suit Alfonso's taste. Also added half of a large jalapeno, seeded and diced fine.

Yellow Clooney Cake

A bit dry. If I make again try to add more moisture. Very mild flavor that will be enhanced by a good frosting.

Mom's Buttercream Frosting

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2012
So So. Doesn't make much frosting. And it was very loose. I added cream cheese to bump up the flavor and quantity and to thicken.

Grandma McAndrews' Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2012
3-1/2 stars. Dough was quite wet. Could be because I was short 1 cup of flour and substituted cake flour. Finished product is quite bland and a bit dry.

Chef John's Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2012
3-1/2 stars. Can not get buttermilk in Mexico so I subbed with yogurt. Chicken was quite moist and tender. But the flavor was not what I had hoped. I did add a few more spices but was not totally happy with the flavor. Needs to be fried at a lower temp as the breading browned too much and the chicken was not cooked through.

Easy Cheese and Garlic Scones

As others noted, these are more like biscuits in texture. Flavor was OK. But I think I prefer the knock-off recipe for Red Lobster Biscuits.

Chipotle Cream Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2012
Excellent! Even Alfonso liked it! Hurray!! I omitted the green bell as I did not have it. Which was OK because I'm thinking it may not taste that good in this dish.....not sure if I'd like the flavor with the chipotle. The cilantro was a nice touch. Also, it was very easy to make.

Tzatziki Sauce I

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2012
Excellent! I used sour cream because I bought the wrong yogurt (rats!). Also, used dried dill because I can not get fresh in Mexico. I added some chopped parsley for freshness. All in all, the flavor was very good.

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Pretty good. A bit too sweet and too thick for my taste. Next time, thin it out a bit and reduce honey by half. Maybe a bit more garlic too.

Traditional Gyro Meat

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2012
Not too bad, although a bit dry. I used ground pork in place of the lamb (Can not get lamb in Mexico). Tweaked the seasoning a bit by frying a small patty, tasting, adjusting. Did that twice til I was happy with the taste. By the time the sauce was added to the sandwich, it tasted great, just too dry.

Orange Cake

Reviewed: May 7, 2012
Pretty good. The cake was a bit dry but had good flavor. May be somewhat my fault as I used regular flour in place of the cake flour (all I had at the time). The glaze also had a nice flavor. Would make again.

3 1/2 Stars. Did not have the traditional Souvlaki flavor. Not sure what was off......maybe the soy sauce?
