Well I'm gonna give a quick update on my patient... did anyone get that I didn't say favorite or least favorite patient?   In my career I've had quite a few.... " I love this man... I love this man!"  This being my Mantra for the past few days!

I think I can make my LOML (Love Of My Life) a little happier if I can find something to make his taste buds Happier.  Seriously Where did Jims Taste buds go?  Is this a common problem after Total Knee Surgery?

So far the only foods that have made an impact are scrambled eggs and fried fish sandwiches! JIm is not a big fish fan... What is going on?

OK my veteran knee buddies... fill me in!  I Kneed a little help!  ( Magnolia Blossom is responsible for the pun!)

Oh the update... we are at 100 degrees of flexion and 0 degrees of extension!  He got in the shower for the first time... all by himself... cussing aside!  We are strolling up to 100ft. at one time!

Every night he thinks about all of you guys... has a title for his blog... we read through comments, I catch him grinning between grimaces!

Thanks again AR community!

Jim and his buddy!

If they gave him gas in surgery, that will mess with his taste buds for a few weeks. I can deeply feel for his disdain because I had lost mine for a long time. Most of it has returned, though.

Mike It's been 10 days... you just gave me a little hope! If I can't feed him I'm just another Therapist telling him what to do! Ugh! This too shall pass!

Hi Terry & Jim: Glad to read the update -- I've been praying for Jim and hoping the pain gets a little easier each day, and it will. I was in a lot of pain for 6 weeks, it let up a bit, and by 3 months the pain was nearly gone. I was in therapy 3x a week for 5 months and that helped so much. As for the taste buds, my problem was I had no appetite at all. The pain was so intense I didn't care if I ever ate again. For the 2 weeks I was in rehab I lost 20 lbs. (I could easily afford this!! Nothing tasted good at all. However, when I got home after a few weeks, I found those 20 lbs. (story of my life!!) Please tell Jim to hang in there as it does get better. When you said he thought he made the biggest mistake of his life I felt the same way. The only thing that will help is the passing of time. It seems like a long time now, but in about 6 weeks the pain should lessen. You're both in my prayers and I'll look forward to some updates.

Oh Terry - I feel for you as much as for Jim. You sound like you feel helpless - like nothing you do is helping - - and everything hurts!!! Even the comfort of food is lost - - oh no - - say it ain't so!!!!! I know . . . . I will call on "Captain Palate"!!! He is a little known "super-hero" . . .very little known - lol! But he is the avenger of those who have had their taste-buds annihilated by the surgery/med monster - he is known as the "S&M Villain" in the lesser known comic books. So - - Captain P swoops down on SMV and beats him with his rented dentures - ties him up with dental floss (it is some really strong stuff) and chains him to a dental chair to be tortured with a pick and grinder for all eternity!! . . .And the moral of the story is . . . you don't tug on Superman's cape . . you don't spit into the wind . . you don't pull the mask of the ole Lone Ranger . . . and you don't mess around with Jim!!!

Oh Luv! Thank you, thank you! I'm a little tired... but that was funny! Now I can't get that friggin' song outa my head! I'll sing it to Jim when he wakes... been sleeping for two hours straight ... YaY!!!! Thanks for caring!!!!! I love the rented dentures! Thanks for making me laugh!

If Jim is anything like my DH was, you will have earned your place in heaven by the time he is up and around. If he is taking pain meds they can play havoc with his taste buds, I think it has something to do with the central nervous system. I tried to email you a few times but it keeps bouncing back. I'm sending good thoughts out for both of you!

Terry (and Jim), my thoughts go out to you! I've never lost my appetite or my sense of taste, so I can't help out with any suggestions. It sounds reasonable that pain meds could mess up his taste, etc. Just think how great it's going to be when he does get back his appetite and taste! Hang in there - things will get better!!!

Believe it or not but being in pain can affect your sense of taste, had a DR tell me that long ago. I was going to say it could be the pain meds screwing with those taste buds. My Dad hated McDonalds but after being on meds a long time he just loved those hamburgers. Still wishing you a speedy recovery!

Hi Terry-I had surgery a few months ago and I think after having all the nausea, it took me a couple of weeks to get back my appetite. I'm sure Jim will start feeling better soon!

Thanks guys! That all kinda makes sense! I'm making him some eggrolls and stirfry tonight, his favorite... fingers crossed!

agree with the above. MOst likely the anasthesia. Needs to drink a lot of fluids and flush out his system. Gets in the fat cells. Activity to tolerance helps too, that is his tolerance (not yours ha ha). My open heart patients (that is the bedside nursing I did) mostly did best with cold foods at first. Tuna salad, chicken salad, fruit plates, hard boiled eggs, cold cereal. On the hot side, they all could do eggs and grilled cheese. Good luck. This too shall pass. I lost 18bls. when I had my knee done, but I was inpatient rehab for 14 days and I think the workout in the gym twice a day helped a lot. Of course it all came back. You know what I am doing about that now. It is worth it, just does not seem that it was a successful surgery right at first.

Hehe, fix him a Space Kneedle Smoothie from this site. Maybe it will help him fight off the S&M Villain. (Wondered where the heck luv2cook was going with that one...)

Thanks Carol! It's nice to have you here! I did buy fruit and coldcuts, tuna salad and chicken salad, lettuce and some yogurt! Gonna give it a try I'll let you know!

My husband had the same problem. It took quite a while before things tasted good to him again. Everything had a funny taste. Along with your chants that you love this man, you might chant "This too shall pass!" Hard to remember when you are in the middle of it but it is true.

About Me
I was a working mother of 2 boys! I didn't have much time for cooking... now that the boys are grown and on their own... I have been enjoying learning and appreciating the art of cooking. I started with a day of baking with my mother in law and I was hooked! Not to mention my new stepkids... what was two... now is four! Our family is growing we now have a grandson, Damien, and one on the way! My grandson loves his visits with Gramma and Grampa...We spend quality time in the kitchen snd chronical our visits here on AR!
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake! It is my therapy...I love to buy and read all types of recipe books ( call me old fashion ) but it's fun to pick out 1 recipe in a new book and try it the day I get the book!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My husband and I have great times cooking meals together! When the kids come to visit we let them request their menu of choice. Funny twist... my two boys request Jim's culinary feasts... Jim's two request Stepmom's dinner delights! Works out fine at the end of the day!
My cooking triumphs
Check out my pics, the wedding cake? It was my 1st attempt at a wedding cake... can you believe it... I still can't!
My cooking tragedies
so many... hard to pick just one! but isn't that the joy of cooking?
