Sometimes You Just Gotta ...

Sometimes in life there are circumstances that you just can't believe are possible. I want to pre-empt this blog with an "I'm sorry" if my skewed sense of humor offends any of you good readers.
And so the story goes.....
My dear sister asked me to ride along with her to deposit my niece and two of her teenaged buddies to Hendersonville... " Of course I will" was my response. Neither of us thinking that this weekend was a holiday weekend... off we go down I-26!
Not even fourty or so miles into our journey... traffic slows... could it be a car accident? Fourty minutes and just 5 miles later...
Yep ... three cars in the median, up aganist the gaurd rail. The five of us said a prayer for all involved and off to the mountain we go.
Up, up and up we go! Finally we deposit our precious cargo for their fun labor day extravaganza, and a brief time away from our beloved city of Lexington. The kids are planning to attend the annual Apple Festival and Aunt Terry was promised a bounty of North
Carolina apples upon their return!
As my sis and I bid the kids farewell , buckle our seat belts and look forward to just the two of us without the giggling teens at our aft. Awwww... sweet quite and some quality sister bonding!
The trip is proceeding well for the first half of our return... Then... traffic comes to a complete stop! Janet and I were a little disconcerted by this new developement ( you see we both really had to pee) and were trying to make the neccessary fifteen miles
to the next rest area!
One hour later - same exact place. No movement of traffic!
Two hours have now passed and the cars have not moved an inch.... we definately were not too encouraged that this situation was going to be resolved anytime soon!
We recieve word from our fellow holiday travelers that a tanker has flipped and is blocking the entire highway and we were looking at
four more hours of the life on this beautiful stretch of road, seriously a very pretty highway as far as highways go! Back to our saga...
Still with our urgent need to figure out how two middle-aged ladies are going to resolve our toileting issue. We take turns voicing possible scenarios... none of which we didn't fear, that wthout a doubt, would end up on you tube.
Waiting... waiting... and miracles begin to happen! Our good friends Mr. highway patrol begins having miles of parked cars to turn around and proceed down the emergency lane back in the direction of which we had come! Yeah... won't be long now before our
now almost dire situation is about to come to an end...
Making it through the detour without a hitch and now traveling down I-385 toward home... we spy a multiple amount of break lights being applied just as our GPS informs us we are just two miles from the next rest area...and sweet relief! We look at each other
then back to the red glow of the multitude of tailights and then back to each other again...
"are you kidding me?" Thirty minutes later and those grueling two miles, we pass what looks to be an awful accident. For a brief moment our bathroom delima was not a big a deal as it has been for the past four hours...
Our thoughts and prayers do go out to all of the familes touched by travel accidents this holiday... and I hope that you all are aware that my humor is not to deminish the above sentiment in any way!
...but I do think we need more rest areas in route from Hendersonville to Lexington, ... or at least a few random port-a-johns.
Be safe everyone and have a great holiday!
