About this Cook
I grew up in kitchens--my parents own and operate a steakhouse in rural Nebraska. Ironic, then, that I became a vegetarian in 2002! I pride myself, however, in being able to come up with vegetarian dishes that satisfy my non-vegetarian friends and family.
My favorite things to cook
Lately I am attracted to vegan cooking and baking. I love to garden and enjoy using home-grown produce.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Old-fashioned Midwestern comfort foods--meatloaf, mashed potatoes, macaroni & cheese, etc.--are a staple in the family in which I grew up. I still enjoy these foods, but have updated them to be meatless while still retaining flavor and texture.
My cooking triumphs
I make a gorgeous stuffed, braided bread. It's a beautiful presentation and it looks so complex, but it's really a cinch. :)
My cooking tragedies
I made breakfast for visiting in-laws, and the scrambled eggs came out... green! How embarrassing!

Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti
Great! As others mentioned, the dough was crumbly but I was just very careful with it, and they still turned out great. Made a double batch and took them to work; they were gone by 10:00 a.m. What really made them move from "great" to "awesome" was drizzling them with a coffee glaze!

Classic Peanut Butter Cookies
These were awesome! I added about 3 TBS of peanut butter powder (the product is called "PB2 Powdered peanut butter" by Bell Plantation, Inc.), and took them out just as the edges started to brown very, very slightly. Let them sit on the cookie sheet for a minute or two before removing to a cooling rack. They came out chewy and delicious!

Mustard Vinaigrette
This was awesome! I used Splenda instead of the honey to keep it as low in calories as possible. You could also substitute half the oil with a strong broth if you like - I used 1/2 cup reconstituted vegetable bouillon.
