Sandy's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2008
This is the best chocolate cake I've ever made. I made no changes to the ingredients and the cake came out perfect. It is dense, but a little light. The taste is unbeliveable when combined with the "Rich Chocolate Frosting" recipe from this website. I recently made this for a church dinner and it was a hit. The only change I did do was to bake it in a 9X13 pan. It did rise quite a bit, so be careful. I actually had enough batter left to make 4 "tester" cupcakes.

Aunt Fannie's Dinner

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2008
Very bland! I added cumin, chili powder, cheese, and a little sugar to spice it up a bit. It was pretty good after that, but the recipe as written has no taste.

Delicious. I followed the recipe exactly as written. It was light, not too sweet, and pretty.

Ninety-Six Hour Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2008
The cake wasn't bad, but definitely wasn't worth waiting four days for. I actually tasted small pieces after each 24hour period and I found no difference in taste or moistness from day 1 to day 4. So if you want an easy coconut box cake, this is an ok recipe, but if you're expecting something exceptional after the 4th day, you'll probably be disappointed.

Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2008
The meat came out very tender (of course after all that time in slow cooker), but not much flavor. All the flavor was in the sauce and the meat was just bland. If I made this again, I would season the meat with garlic, sage and seasoning salt before cooking. Also I thought the sauce was too tangy, so I added a little brown sugar near the very end which helped it out a lot.

Lemonade Cake III

Good, moist, and lemony. Pretty good for a box cake. Don't cook as long as recipe states.

Banana Pudding IV

Reviewed: Mar. 15, 2008
I've tried to submit my review earlier, but hopefully this one will go and there won't be 2! Anyway...I took this dish to a church dinner and everyone raved over it. I actually saw a few women hiding pieces of it. These are seasoned cooks...so I felt very proud. The recipe is very easy. I really made no changes except I had to use Lite topping because the store was out of the regular. I also crushed up cookies on the top. I made it about 5 hrs before serving. I wanted to make it the night before but was afraid the bananas would turn dark. However, I was told by someone that making the night before is ok as they prefer the cookies soft. I guess its a matter of taste. I highly recommend this recipe!

Sweet Potato Pie I

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2008
I would have rated this a 5, but I didn't follow the recipe exactly as written. I used others' suggestions and used 1/2 C white sugar and 1/2 C brown sugar. I actually thought it could have still been sweeter.... I'm very southern and I like my sweet stuff sweet! I also am not a big fan of nutmeg, so I personally think the recipe calls for too much of it. I actually think it would be better without it altogether, but that is just a matter of taste. I took this pie to a church dinner and every bit of it as eaten and I heard no complaints!

Four Cheese Macaroni

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2008
Good recipe. I added much more cheese and much more half & half (about 3 cups). I also heated half & half and melted cheeses in it. I only cooked for about 10 minutes... just long enough to melt cheese on top. This kept it kind of creamy. Also, I just added 1 egg. Served this at a church dinner and it was one of the few dishes there that was all eaten. I would like to try again using a white sauce to see if it would come out creamier.

Mom's Macaroni and Cheese

This is my favorite mac & cheese. I make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I do add more cheese and also a little more milk to make it creamier.

Caramel Frosting IV

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2008
THis is very similar to a recipe I use. I want to add that using dark brown sugar instead of light brown makes a much tastier frosting. This is wonderful on yellow cake.

Cherry Pound Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2007
Wonderful! I took the advice of other posters and added more cherries. I decorated with a glaze made from reserved cherry juice, powdered sugar, & almond extract. I made this 2 days ago and it is still moist. I cooked it in a bundt pan for only 50 minutes.

Easy Seven Layer Vegetable Salad

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2007
I made this for an early Christmas meal. It was delicious. I didn't make any changes to the recipe except that I used both red and green peppers to make it look more Christmasy. I used bagged iceburg lettuce and prepared it about 7 hours in advance. I was very pleased with the dish.

Sausage Balls

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2007
Dry! I used a ham sausage that didn't have a lot of fat, so maybe that was my mistake. This is not the recipe I expected. A co-worker makes a similar one that looks more like a biscuit with sausage & cheese added. This recipe is not look very pretty at all. I'm glad I made it a few days in advance so I have time to find another recipe.

Chunky Chicken Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
Very good. However, it needs a little "doctoring up". I used frozen broccoli and cauliflower mix (I didn't thaw first as recipe suggests). I also used instant brown rice instead of white. I like the texture of brown rice better, but I think a cup was too much. The dressing mix give the soup a very nice flavor but I still had to add salt and I added a few shakes of McCormick's Garlic Pepper. Very easy to make. I had it done and on my way out the door in 1/2 hr.

Banana Cake VI

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
Cake was good, but it was more like a banana bread than a cake. It also didn't have much flavor to it. I would have rated it 3 stars, but the frosting boosted the flavor of the dish.

Veggie Vegetarian Chili

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2007
I was disappointed. It was good, but bland. I substituted spaghetti for the carrots, but everything else I did as the recipe called for. There was just not enough flavor for me. I've added more chili powder and cumin which has helped. I've also added salt and a bit of sugar. I'm still working on it. Hopefully it will be better tomorrow after it sits overnight.

Strawberry Spinach Salad I

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2007
I didn't like it. First of all the sugar never dissolved... yuck! Maybe my oil was bad or something, but the dressing just was not good to me. Maybe if the salad had more ingredients like other fruits or chicken it would have helped. Definitely not a keeper for me.
