About this Cook
I am more of a baker than a cook. We eat some meat and fish, but not a lot. I enjoy growing my own vegetables. I try to cook vegetarian meals at least a few times a week, and a lot of quick and easy dinners since we both work full time. I am always keen to find new recipes using as little processed food as possible. I bake from scratch, very rarely using packet mixes. I believe good food, made with love is not BAD for you. I'd rather avoid artificial sweeteners and flavourings, and use real food, sugar, maple syrup, butter and eat in moderation.
My favorite things to cook
When I have the time I love to bake. I'm not big into making full size cakes, even though i like to decorate them. I'd rather make small individual treats - cupcakes, muffins, cookies etc. my husband takes them in his packed lunch too.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I think my sisters and I have all picked up on the baking side of things from our Grandmother, and then mum. Grandma would always have some yummy shortbread waiting for us, and homemade treats - even though she worked in one of New Zealands big cookie (we say biscuit) manufacturer's - she still loved to bake her own.

Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies
Worked fine for me - but being in NZ we dont use shortening that often, so I dropped that and the margarine and replaced with 150g butter. (and used salted butter, so dropped the salt). Made 3 trays worth of cookies -so goes a long way.

Green Risotto with Fava Beans
If you grow your own fava beans (we call them Broad Beans here in New Zealand - in case you were interested), pick them when they are smaller and haven't developed the bitter grey outer layer. that way they taste similar to fresh peas and there's no need to worry about pre-boiling and peeling the skin.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie
This is a good recipe in itself, but the cookies spread far too much for me - and 1/4 cup made cookies the size of a side plate. So, I tinkered with it a bit and reduced the butter by half, brown surgar to 3/4 cup and white sugar to 1/4cup. One tablespoon lots on the tray made a more normal sized cookid. Not so sweet, but not as chewy as the orginal - but a good compromise if the sugar levels are too much for you.
