we were so excited to be chosen as a winning dinner party idea in mccormick's dinner party chain contest for our 1920's speakeasy style dinner party idea!  diving into a little competition is always good for getting a jolt of creativity and energy in your cooking and hosting.

i'm pretty sure throwing a successful soiree requires a balance of good food and great company.  having friends who are willing to go crazy with a theme doesn't hurt, either!

the recipes we created were adapted from allrecipes.com recipes for the most part (a FAVORITE is the Lady Baltimore Cake with Lady Baltimore Frosting, both from allrecipes.com - trust me, this old fashioned recipe is so worth the effort!); click over to www.dancingwithmyfather.blogspot.com for links and more photos!

what great dinner parties have you thrown?  what are your secrets to success?

have had good luck with retro fondue parties. I don't use oil. Cook in herbedbroth. Makes for good conversation, setting a moderate pace and enjoying something different. I usually serve filet mingon and chicken, sometimes shrimp too. Par boiled gourmet potatoes including purple, popovers, and a simple mixed greens salad with olive oil and lemon drizzle and shards of good quality parm. For sauces, I usually offer curry mayo, garlic aolie, bbq sauce, and maybe a mustard or sweet and sour sauce. Last time I added oregano baked tomato slices from this site which went over great.

oh, my, covergirl! that sounds amazing! we do love our fondue parties, but you have kicked it up a notch with the sauces. we often use fat free italian dressing, too, and it works great. thank you for sharing!

About Me
I'm a mom of five, one-time semi-finalist for The Next Food Network Star, now "focusing" on my photography business and home-educating our awesome growing chefs.
My favorite things to cook
garlic, sweets, and thai!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I can still taste my grandma Margaret's fried peach pies, grandpa's tomatoes fresh and warm from the garden sun (eaten whole while standing at the kitchen window)... Grandma Rose's five cheese macaroni and marinated hearts of palm. Now we're making our own traditions with dad's jalapeno mac n' cheese and my son's made-from-scratch-with-no-recipe pie crust (and any filling that strikes his fancy!).
My cooking triumphs
Learning to cook at all! Learning to love chicken even when I've held it raw. Enjoying bananas and brussels sprouts! Teaching my kiddos to cook and letting them experiment, without my input, to create their own masterpieces.
My cooking tragedies
The ginormous bowl of tuna pasta salad (which I detest!) which got pitched directly after I made it, on a pregnancy-induced-craving whim... the "vinegar and sour cream" crock-pot chicken I made my new husband of two weeks, which he couldn't choke down!
