Straying away from the traditional Thanksgiving dinner was interesting. My daughter decided she didn't want turkey and all the fixings. My husband agreed to try it. Together they decided they wanted Mexican food. I cringed. Cheese.. cheese.. and more cheese!! Being lactose intolerant really sucks!  I knew from the start that I would not be able to enjoy dinner, but they had settled on the idea of it.  I know you'll ask why didn't I choose dishes that don't have a lot of cheese in them. I have a habit of making my family meals that I don't like or won't eat. But that will have to be another post to tell that story.

Here is a link to the menu I planned using the menu feature.  It all looks so good. It smelled pretty good too! They loved it and it made me happy to see them enjoy it.  I ended up having a bologna sandwich (I'm not complaining).  I didn't feel right making a completely different meal for myself. We have an extremely tight budget when it comes to groceries, and honestly there was no way I could afford to make something else without cutting into another days meal during the weeks after.

The husband and daughter loved their meal. It took them 3 whole days to finish the leftovers. We are having a turkey and all the fixings for Christmas. I really missed the stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes etc for Thanksgiving dinner this year. I told them as long as I get one of the holidays for "traditional" I have no problem trying something new next year too.

Aren't you nice?Did you know that Lacteeze makes a lactose free milk, and there is also lactose free swiss cheese.I can't have dairy either, pain in the butt isn't it?.We learn to adapt though, goat cheese is good also.I'm glad your family enjoyed their meal, and glad that your getting your turkey and fixings for Christmas.

I will Always Have Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, And Gravy And Cranberry Sauce (With Real Berries). No, Kid Or Menu Planner Will Ever Change That. Even If I Have To Sink To The Level Of A Hungry Man Turkey TV Dinner.

Not a bad idea KingSparta. Wish I would have thought of that!

Thank you manella. I know there is lactaid milk but I wasn't aware of the cheese. I try to avoid certain things so much I've never bothered to look for alternatives. I'll have to do some exploring next time in I'm in the grocery store.

I use to also not think of it,i know better now, some of of the lactose free is pricey, but the way i look at it,i'm the only eating it,so it lasts a while.Hope you are able to find some where you live.

I love making soups and breads! Stuffed cabbage and chili are two more of my favorites.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making homemade kolachys, chocolate crinkles, and sugar cookies for the holidays. We always make more than the 3 of us can eat.. but the left overs sure are good! I love my husbands glazed ham and look forward it at the holidays.
My cooking tragedies
Making macaroni and cheese and not cooking the noodles all the way. (Home Ec 7th grade) I can NOT make fried chicken.
