About this Cook
My husband and I are retired and travel a lot. He does dinner 99% of the time (and a good job, too!) I prefer to bake and I have a nice collection of dessert cook books I like to use but will always look on the web for interesting alternatives. Most of what I do to keep myself busy is knit and spin. I try to keep an eye on my waist line, so much of what I bake goes to pot lucks, bake sales, gifts or parties.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake desserts! I'm definitely not a chocoholic, but I really enjoy making chocolate desserts. I cannot resist brownies, and have my favorite recipe, but I'll always ask for someone else's recipe if I enjoy the brownie. I rarely (almost never) make anything from a mix.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother was an uninspired cook making meat and potatoes with canned or frozen vegetables every night. She never used fresh fruit or vegetables, with the exception of potatoes, occasionally carrots, and bananas. My husband was raised similarly. We both cook using fresh, whole ingredients. We have, then made our own tradition, which our children continue.
My cooking triumphs
Nothing in particular comes to mind. I'm good at reading a recipe and judging a fairly accurate outcome. I've never had any real cooking lessons or classes (I read Joy of Cooking almost cover to cover to learn how to cook better than my mother)so following a recipe is mostly what I do.
My cooking tragedies
No real tragedies, except my husband won't eat my leftovers if I cook dinner. So, I leave the meals to him and stick to baking.
