Strawberries and Cream Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2003
This was better than your average strawberry shortcake. The cake part was very moist and dense. Although the cream cheese frosting on the sides was yummy, it was a little hard to ice with the whipped cream oozing out from between the layers. If you are short on time or want to cut the richness of the cake, you can easily skip on the frosting. I also should have listened to my instincts and used nonstick cooking spray instead of greasing and flouring the pans per the recipe. The cake layers stuck and I had to piece them back together. For anyone who hasn't tried it, I've never had a cake stick when using Pam or Mazola.

Corn and Zucchini Melody

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2003
This was excellent fresh cooked, but did not taste as good reheated since the zucchini tends to get overcooked and watery when microwaved. Those who thought it mushy to begin with probably overcooked the vegetables. It tastes best tender-crisp.

Rice Cereal Energy Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2003
I had a little trouble with this recipe at first. The peanut butter mixture didn't seem to be enough to glue the cereal together, so I had to make extra. Also, I found heating the peanut butter and syrup in the microwave messy and more trouble than it's worth. Next time, I will cook the mixture in a big pot on the stove, then gradually add the cereal, which I think will help it mix more evenly. The end result, though, is fantastic, and much better than those expensive energy bars that you buy in the store. They are great for breakfast and a mid-afternoon snack. This one is a keeper!

Balsamic Green Bean Salad

Reviewed: May 30, 2006
A nice change of pace from ordinary green beans. I find the recipe as written a little plain for my tastes, but it is a great base to add your favorite ingredients to. I added sun-dried tomatoes and feta cheese.

Chocolate Pear Spice Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2009
This cake is great for the holidays. The spices, orange, pear, and chocolate are a great combination and the cake itself is moist and not too heavy. This is one of the best cake recipes I have gotten off of this site.

Italian Sausage Tortellini Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2007
This was great! I used a lowfat chicken italian sausage and substituted mushrooms for the zucchini (boyfriend doesn't like it), but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly. A great, hearty meal on a cold, rainy night. The best was that I threw it together in less than 45 minutes.

Mall Pretzels

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2003
A winner! This is too easy, especially if you make the dough in a bread machine...you do not need extra flour to roll out the ropes. I did not use parchment paper, but just sprayed down the cookie sheet with Pam and they came out perfect, with that crusty-chewy bottom. The hardest part is not gobbling them all up at once when they come out of the oven.

Urban Legend Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2003
I've been making these cookies for years. This is absolutely the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, more chips and nuts than cookie! They are very dense and a little crunchy, not soft and "cakey" like some recipes.

Grandma's Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2003
I love this recipe, it is easy and fast, but tastes like you cooked all day. I didn't use the recommended amount of salt, but just salted it to my taste. This is a recipe for people who like lots of chicken and noodles. Using a rotisserie chicken from the grocery gives it a great flavor, plus there is enough meat left to freeze for a second pot! I will make this often.

Raspberry and Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

Reviewed: May 30, 2006
I love these cookies and make them often. They taste just like wedding cake! On dry days the mixture can be a little too crumbly so I add 1 egg yolk and the dough comes together nicely.

Cheesy Onion Roll-Ups

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2004
I gave this four stars because the people in my office ate these up and commented on how good they were. I thought they were very bland, though, all I tasted was cream cheese and tortilla. I like my mexican-style food very spicy. Some hot taco seasoning and more cheese may make these better.

Kay's Spaghetti and Lasagna Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2003
This is a great, simple meat sauce recipe. I add fresh mushrooms and use 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 Italian sausage. Since I was never a big fan of sauces heavy on oregano, this one is just perfect. Although it's ready to eat in 40 minutes, it tastes even better after 2 hours.

Heather's Cilantro, Black Bean, and Corn Salsa

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2009
I think this is a great alternative to traditional salsa. I can serve it at a party with chips or use it as a salad topping. Very cool and refreshing.

Yellow Cake Made from Scratch

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2003
I have made a lot of cakes from this website, but this is the first one I was disappointed with. Like other reviewers, the cake was too dry for me and lacked flavor, even though I added an extra tsp of vanilla. The cake rose beautifully in the oven, but collapsed after I took it out to cool. After comparing other yellow cake recipes, I think this one doesn't call for enough eggs. Sorry, but I won't make this one again.

Sean's Falafel and Cucumber Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2003
This is a very good recipe and tasted fresher than what I've had in many Greek restaurants. I used a little more cayenne, as I like spice. The hardest part is getting the oil temperature right...to low and it soaks up too much oil, too hot and they don't cook all the way through. Definitely one I will make again.

Dark Chocolate Cake II

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2007
This is a great dark, moist cake. I took other advice and used buttermilk instead of regular milk and vinegar. The batter is a little thin and I was concerned, but it bakes up wonderful. I also increased the servings to 18 so as to have nice, thick layers. Tastes incredible with cream cheese icing and strawberries!

Greek Avgolemono Soup with Chicken

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2006
This recipe was only okay to me. I followed the recipe with the exception of using white rice instead of orzo pasta. The taste was a bit bland, even with all the Greek seasoning.

Scandinavian Almond Bars

Reviewed: Jul. 8, 2006
Great cookies and simple to make. I'm glad that I doubled the recipe! I drizzled mine with melted chocolate instead of the icing, but I think they are great either way.

Quinoa Tabbouleh

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2006
This is a very light and refreshing salad for summer and my first attempt to make anything with quinoa. It is a VERY healthful grain and contains a lot of protein. I ate a small bowl of this and was full for hours! Great for dieters because it tastes good, too!

Butternut Squash Bisque

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2006
I LOVE this recipe. If you do not add the cream, it is a very healthful way to get a serving of vegetable. Sometimes, I make it just as the recipe states and other times, I leave out the nutmeg and add a spoonful of curry paste for a spicy, exotic version. One of my favorites!
