I'm back from Southern California.  I've given my mother a clean bill of health -- with the provision that she obeys everything I taught her to do.  I'm so glad to be back -- my plumbing in my bathroom did not like my absence, and I had to deal with a leaking connector to my toilet.  The… MORE

Yeah, it's been ages since I've blogged, however, by the title, you can tell I'm not in Kenai anymore... at least for the moment. Mom had surgery.  Dad ain't no nurse and would rather ignore than help.  Also, he is so rickety on his legs, I don't trust him safely managing the situation.  I… MORE

Comment to Mike Harvey:  I am very glad I’m not the only person who has issues with the statins.  My father has had hypercholesterolemia, and the statins caused such severe joint and muscle pain.  Fortunately, his cardiologist likes to think outside the box as much as I do and put him on… MORE

Just like what Dr. Spitz (an amazing pediatric neurologist I had the pleasure of knowing) once said:  “It’s never one thing; it’s twelve...”And that’s how my life has been lately...It hasn’t been since my last blog entry that I have been able to do anything.  It’s that computer incompatibility… MORE

Comment to CookinArgentina:  No, you don’t have to eat all FIVE one-pound hamburger patties.  You only have to eat just one.  However, you CAN order more than one patty, but if you do that, you MUST eat the whole thing in order to qualify for the Wall of Shame.  Personally, I feel that if we… MORE

When I lived in Michigan, the best grill was ribeye.  When I lived in Ohio, it was baby back ribs Mandarin-style.  However, the great grill of choice, other than moose, caribou, or spruce hens, is the burger.  But not just any burger will do.  It MUST be HUGE and loaded… MORE

Responding to a comment made by CookinArgentina:  The people who appeared in the emergency rooms because they unknowingly breathed in the marijuana from that huge, burning hay barn...  Since we knew the symptoms of being stoned, we did urine drug screens for those who didn’t believe MORE

In 1985, I moved to Lansing, Michigan, to attend the Osteopathic medical school at Michigan State University and spent the next thirteen years there, being educated and working at a women’s health clinic named Gardner Wellness Center under the auspices of St. Lawrence Hospital. La MORE

Comment to CookinArgentina:  Denali National Park is a must!  And take the bus all the way back to the lodge -- don't skimp by only going part-way.  And bring your best telephoto lenses for your camera, because you will definitely be needing it.  About a year before you… MORE

Comment to Mike Harvey about my Board name and how it reflects on my ability as a physician: LOL!  Just to educate you, "Borderbumble" is the nickname of one of my border collies who experienced peri-natal hypoxia and did cause some brain damage.  No matter how I tried, I… MORE

About Me
I have lived many places, including Amish Country in Ohio, but Alaska is the place I adore. I get all my seafood from Peninsula Seafoods, including wild white King Salmon, and King Crab at $9.95 a pound! I love the summers where it is just around sunset all night long! And on the Summer Solstice, we'll either stay up all night with the Dragon Drummers or go fishing in the middle of the night. In the Winter, we hibernate and eat comfort food.
My favorite things to cook
I LUV to grill! I'll grill all the veggies in my house once I get my charcoal grill going. I also love Asian cooking, especially Japanese, but Kalbi is my all-time favorite meat to grill.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother on my mother's side left me a lot of her authentic Slovak recipes which I adore. I also tried to learn as much from my Uncle Bob who is a chef extraordinaire.
My cooking triumphs
Anything seafood and noodles. In fact, I make my own pasta because it tastes so much better and soaks up the flavors of my sauces.
My cooking tragedies
Lately, I really screwed up meatloaf. And some goolash I recently did. Yuck!!! How can anyone mess up on these two entrees?? I guess I can...
