I am happily married to the love of my life and we have four wonderful children. I have the benefit of working from our home and consequently have been able to stay at home with our children. I consider raising our children to be the best job ever.
I love cooking and baking for and with my family. Over the last few years, my dear hubby has joined me in the kitchen and we love to experiment with new recipes to expand our palate. Whenever possible we like to use the produce from our gardens.
My other hobby is wine making. We love to entertain and we get great joy out of pairing our wines with our dinners and our tapas nights.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook and bake all sorts of things. My main goal has been to make homemade and healthy recipes whenever possible.
Over the last two years I have started milling my own flours and making bread. I have been trying to make more healthy and whole grain varieties of bread.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Birthdays are a big deal in our family. My kids get to choose their favorite meal and dessert for their birthday dinner. Over the years I loved to bake and decorate my children's birthday cakes. As they are growing older, they have switched to favorite desserts now.
My other family tradition is Christmas baking. I love to start baking in November to have about a dozen different cookies and squares ready for Christmas entertaining and gift giving. My children love to help with this. This year they made cookies into shapes without the use of cookie cutters. They used the colored cookie dough like playdough and created beautiful Christmas themed cookies!
My cooking triumphs
There have been many cooking triumphs over the years. It is very rewarding to have family and friends enjoy your cooking and baking! The first cooking triumph that comes to mind was when I cooked my husband's favorite dinner to perfection. I made him a prime rib dinner au jus complete with garlic mashed potatoes, yorkshire pudding, asparagus, and homemade rolls. He raved about it for days!
Another skill I have been mastering is canning and preserving. With all of the garden produce we are growing, it has been so rewarding to process the excess for later use. I have made my own salsa, pasta sauce, tomato soup, stewed tomatoes, apple sauce, pickled beets, pickled beans, pickled eggs, and numerous jams and jellies. I have canned them all with great success.
My cooking tragedies
Thankfully there have not been as many cooking tragedies! There is one tragedy that happened when we had guests for dinner. We were having a BBQ rotisseried chicken. I usually leave the grilling to my husband, but needed to start the chicken before he got home. The chicken ended up in flames and I got a lesson in using indirect heat!
