Hot Tamale Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2014
There are so many possibilities that would make this dish perfect! I loved the sweetness of the corn muffin mixed with the peppery spices and salt in the meat. Very good! It was definitely delicious but, I know I could make it better suit my families tastes. I pretty much followed the recipe aside from adding a little garlic, cumin, and onion powder. It wasn't more than a pinch of each spice that I'd added and that's all it needed. I tasted the filling and I felt it needed more flavor. Adding a bit more cheese next time might be a possibility as well, because it was the tiniest bit dry this time around. I wonder if there is something you could add to take some of the dryness away. Maybe an extra egg in the bread mix? I don't know. What I do know, is that I'll definit make this again. You just can't go wrong with any of Chef Johns recipes.

Slow Cooker Pork and Sauerkraut

Reviewed: Aug. 14, 2014
This was very good! My husband had thirds. That's how good it was. I followed the recipe exactly aside from adding chicken broth instead of water. This was very easy to make too. Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely be making this again.

Pina Colada Ice Pops

Reviewed: Jul. 24, 2014
I really liked these but, they could stand to be a bit sweeter. Next time I'll add pineapple juice and some dried coconut. Overall, I thought that this recipe makes a good base for a great popsicle.

Hash Brown Casserole for the Slow Cooker

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2014
I rated this recipe with four stars because it was really good. Although I did enjoy it, I think next time I'll add less sour cream as it seemed to overpower most of the other ingredients. Maybe in place of one cup of sour cream I'll add one can of cream of chicken soup. Taking the advice from previous reviews I used shredded cheddar because I absolutely despise processed cheese of any kind. This was good advice! Thanks to all of you that recommended that change.

Pork Chops for the Slow Cooker

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2014
I liked the flavor of the sauce but, the pork chops were a little dry. Since most reviews were saying that it was too salty, I cut the soy sauce in half. I added a quarter cup honey and I also added a half cup beef broth. The sauce was very flavorful but, I think next time I'll use a seared pork tenderloin.

Slow Cooked Apple Brown Betty

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2013
This was a great recipe! I didn't follow it exactly but, it was a great start to my finished product. I loved the way the bread almost melts when it's done. I used cinnamon swirl bread and a mixture of sweet and tart apples. Serving it over vanilla ice cream is an absolute must! I served mine hot because, no one could wait to try it. They were all begging me to dish it up; they weren't willing to let it cool down a little. I will definitely make this again. It was easy and really awesome!

Stephen's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2012
These were awesome cookies! I loved the consistency. I will definitely make the again. Honestly, I just made them last week and they were gone so fast that I plan to make them again today. The baking powder seemed to make them fluffy at first. Then the cooling process helped them settle down making them nice and chewy. All of the different chips and nuts made every bite taste a little different than the last. Thanks for sharing! This was a really creative cookie recipe.

Gingersnap Dip

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2011
This was an ok dip. It resembled cream cheese frosting, rich and with the same consistency. Carrot cake may be a better companion for this recipe. As for the gingersnaps, I love them but, I'm not so sure about this pair. It was way too sweet for my pallet. I'm sorry but, I don't think I'll be making this one again.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2011
I followed this recipe exactly and I can honestly say that this was the best apple pie I've ever had! I wouldn't change a thing about it. It was like eating a candy apple baked in pie crust with a scoop of apple pie filling. What wonderful flavors! My friends and family all commended me on how it turned out. Thank you Grandma Ople! I will never forget you :)

Beef Stew VI

Reviewed: Sep. 25, 2011
I'm giving this one four stars and not five because, my husband didn't like the rosemary. He said that it had a weird consistency but, the flavor was really good. I actually loved this stew and I'll definitely be making it again.

Big Cheeseburger Pizza

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2011
Great recipe and really easy to make! I'm not really into american cheese so, I used mild cheddar and mozzarella instead. I used fresh pizza dough and added garlic powder, a bit of salt, and cracked black pepper. Next time I think I might add bacon. I wasn't sure about the dressing but, it really added a great flavor in the long run!

Tomato Pie I

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2011
I loved this recipe! A couple of friends came for dinner and they were vegetarians so, of course I had to make a few alterations. No problem! I just didn't add the bacon. My husband asked me to add the bacon next time although, he said he it was just fine with out. I used Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust from this site which always turns out great. I added sliced zucchini, bell pepper, spinach, a large spanish onion, & the tomatos (peeled and seedless). I used different cheeses: fresh mozzarella, fontina, provolone, parmesan, and asiago. Also, I always try to use as many fresh and organic ingredients as I can so, I used fresh oregano chopped very fine instead of the dried. Next time, for my husbands sake, I'll try the recipe exactly and follow it verbatim. Oh, and as far as the soggy crust goes, I pre-baked my crust and brushed it with egg to create a seal. It definitely helped. I had no mushy crust; The crust was flaky and all of the veggies made this a really juicy pie. Nothing will stop the juiciness of this pie and I like it that way!

Strawberry Spinach Salad I

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2011
Even though I didn't follow this recipe word for word or step by step, it's ingredients really inspired me. I rated this recipe with five stars for the inspiration it provided. It was absolutely delish! I tossed the spinach in one part balsamic vinaigrette to one part fresh squeezed orange juice. I added the sliced strawberries also adding some orange bell pepper which this recipe didn't call for. The bell pepper and strawberries together tasted amazing. I had a friend say that it tasted like summertime. I also put the sunflower seeds in and that added a nice crunch.

Ham and Cheese Quiche

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2011
I gave this recipe a five star rating because of it's inspiration alone. I didn't follow the recipe completely but I think that my own rendition came out great! I used everything it calls for just different amounts and I only used sharp Cheddar cheese. I used Ruth's Grandma'a Pie Crust recipe for the crust and it was delicious together.

Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2011
I rated this recipe with only four stars because it doesn't give baking times or suggestions. I baked mine at 425 for 15 minutes and then turned the heat down to 325 (fahrenheit) for an additional 30 minutes. The bottom of my crust came out doughy instead of firm and flaky which I would've liked. Aside from this the recipe was great! Thanks for sharing.

J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2011
This was the first time I've ever made biscuits. I rated this a five star recipe because anyone could make them; it was extremely easy and inexpensive to make. I wouldn't change a thing! Thanks for sharing this one... I'll make sure to save it to my favorites. BTW - I used mine to make Strawberry Shortcake. I would recommend that everyone try this at least once as it was very tasty :).

Cha Cha's White Chicken Chili

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2011
This was a great recipe! I love hot foods and this was definitely HOT. It was a bit too hot for me, actually. I added one more can of chicken broth, a bag of cheese, fresh jalapenos with out the seeds, a half teaspoon more cumin, one can of diced tomatoes , chili powder instead of oregano, and ground chicken instead of chopped. I rinsed all of my beans and tomatoes really well. The cheese and extra broth cut down on the spice quite a bit. I think that using fresh seedless jalapenos instead of the canned may have cut down on the heat as well. All in all, this was a very good recipe and easy to manipulate into your own style.
