About this Cook
Girl Raised In The South: GRITS
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake bread, make soups and stews, and try new recipes. Also love to research recipes, cooking methods and foods on the internet.
My favorite family cooking traditions
There is a tradition of great cooks in my family and I have had excellent role models in my grandmothers and my mother. We are Southern cooks but somewhat adventurous in expanding our abilities and palates. We enjoy our family favorite foods at holidays and reunions and we enjoy trying new foods and techniques.
My cooking triumphs
One "triumph" was being asked to conduct a Bread "camp" by some members of That Home Site Cooking Forum. I taught at a bed and breakfast inn in Oak Ridge, NC near Greensboro. Several forum friends flew in from distant locations in the US and we had a ball. Some of the class members now bake bread regularly at home.
My cooking tragedies
In my 8th grade Home Ec class we had to prepare a dinner for our family, set the table, serve the meal and clean up. We were also visited by our teacher so she could evaluate how we did. All was going well for my spaghetti dinner until I accidentally tipped a plate full of spaghetti and sauce onto the floor while I was serving my little sister!

Asian Lettuce Wraps
Tried this recipe after eating the wraps at PF Chang's for the second time - love these wraps! I made per the recipe except for subbing regular ginger root for the pickled ginger and I added about a cup of fine chopped mushrooms to cook down with the vegetables. I think I'll get the pickled ginger next time. I used iceberg lettuce for the wraps and I like the idea of making a salad of shredded lettuce then topping with the meat mixture and some sauce. I used ground turkey, but want to try ground pork also. Wonderful recipe! Thank you, Rachel!

Red Enchilada Sauce
After trying another enchilada sauce recipe (that I threw out) I was very pleased with how this turned out. I used half a 6 oz. can of tomato paste and one 8 oz. can of tomato sauce because that is what I had on hand, omitted the parsley and basil, doubled the chili powder and used about 1 1/4 cups water. It is still simmering and when it is cooled, I will buzz it with the immersion blender and make enchiladas for dinner tomorrow night. The best part of making this sauce is that I know exactly what went in it!

Best Marinara Sauce Yet
This sauce is delicious and so easy to make! I've put it in my Recipe Box and copied by hand into a book of favorite recipes. The only changes I made was to add 1 t. of dried basil and 1 TB brown sugar. I can stop looking for marinara recipes! Thank you, Jackie!
