About this Cook
Retired military. Well traveled. Hate five specks of some kind of food on a forty dollar plate no matter how well presented. Fry cook as a teen-ager in my mom's cafe, between pumping gas at my dad's service station. Loved frying more. Other than helping cook through child rearing years, had little time to experiment until after retirement. It has become almost an illness now. TV programs are sports, History Channel and Food Network. Love Paula Deen, Pioneer Woman and Trisha Yearwood. Watch Chopped religiously and also enjoy Bobby Flay and Alton Brown.
My favorite things to cook
All the BBQ things except seafood. Slow-cooker soups and meals.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making lefse, a tradional Norwegian flat bread, especially for the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. Holiday cookies and candy.
My cooking triumphs
Won two out of the three chili cook-offs I entered. One traditional red and one white/green.
My cooking tragedies
Usually a high oven heat recipe like pan baked steaks or caramelized bacon. Smoke detectors get tested. Don't have great baking success either. To precise and I didn't do well in chemistry. Another problem is having happy hour with the wife when the steaks are on the grill. So much for a medium steak. Have thrown a couple away through the years. I have also over-seasoned a time or too or misread recipes. I remember when we first got married about forty years ago, my wife was going to make a "home-made" salad dressing. Recipe called for vegetable oil, we had no idea what that was so used vegetable shortening. Ish!

Wall's T-Bone Steak Marinade
Tried it this evening on a T-Bone. We buy a half of a beef every year and split with the kids. Problem with doing that is if you get a chewy side you have it for a long time. This side of beef of mine is tasty but a little less than tender so tried the marinade. It was excellent and wouldn't be afraid to use it on a more tender piece of meat. Flavor is that good and not any single ingredient jumps out. I only made one steak so cut the recipe in half. Could have reduced it more for my small portion but it was very tasty and will use again. I appreciate some of the creative one item substitutes, Well, I am guilty. Had to sub lime juice for the lemon. Out of one of those plastic squeeze bottles no less. Grampas Rule!
