I made it as the recipe was written using white pepper. I did not find it to be spicy, but my husband is very sensitive to spicy things and thought it was a little spicy. If you don't like spicy at all, then maybe half or eliminate the white pepper. I thought it was great with the amount written in the recipe though. I was concerned about the use of milk vs. heavy cream and whether the recipe would be heavy enough, but the butter/flour recipe mixed with the milk makes it thick, even using fat free milk. Definitely a keeper! We will be making this again and again!
