Today I have nothing better to do then think of things I can do, and I came up with the idea of Baking (as well as cooking my normal dinner). I have been going through looking for an Amish Friendship Bread Recipe. For some reason it crossed my mind the other day, and hasn't left it since. So I have looked around and have found the starter recipe (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/amish-friendship-bread-starter/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=amish%20friendship%20bread&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Recipe) <

I then did some research because there are many ways to go about it all. I did find a website where the woman went into detail and answered a lot of questions, and then opened it up for readers to ask questions. I was able to read down through those and I believe I have come up with sufficient information to begin my journey into Amish Friendship Bread.

When I first started reading the recipe, I thought it would be a good idea, because I would just put the other "Starters" into the freezer. But after more thought, I realized that if I continued to follow that particular recipe, then I would have a freezer full of starters after a couple months. So... I was able to find (in the website comments) a woman who had figured out how to cut down the amounts to where you only get enough for one loaf with one starter. so that way.. you don't have this pile up of extra starters.

Since we just moved to Atlanta, I don't have anyone to give the starters too (thus my dilemma) so by cutting back the recipe it should work out perfectly. I might even send my husband to work with a loaf.. who knows. I have to make sure the recipe works with the new measurements.

Thursday we go shopping for groceries. That is when I will begin my Amish Friendship Bread Journey :)

I will make another blog post with my results and recipe alterations if they work out!!!

I was once given a loaf of Amish friendship bread, along with a bag of the starter. Seems to me, that the recipe makes two loaves of bread, PLUS 4 bags of starter. Keep one bag, and give 3 to friends (AKA Friendship Bread.) You'll be baking 2 loaves every 10 days, and giving 3 bags to friends... I ran out of friends! I love the thought behind this, and wish you best of luck! The bread is great... but I could only eat so much of it! Be well, and "share the love!"

Hey, don't look at it as "too many starters"...it's FRIENDSHIP bread! Even if your'e new to Atlanta sharing these (with the recipe and instructions) would be a great gesture to new neighbors and acquaintances. You just might meet a foodie like one of us on AR!

Well I DID cut down the numbers, but I made sure to have enough for my husband to take to work. I'm still hesitant about if the measurements are correct, but I guess we will just have to wait and see how it turns out. I will be posting another blog with the continuation of my Amish Bread Journey:)

If you use the original recipe with the original measurements, you can nuture the batter for 10 days, bake a loaf (or two) and freeze the rest. Just split the starter as if you were going to share it with others, but stick the bags in the freezer. When you want to bake again, just pull one of the bags out, defrost it, feed it a little (1/ c. of flour, sugar and milk) and then bake with it right away. There's a webaite called the Friendship Bread Kitchen with lots of variations for AFB and ideas for the starters. Have fun!
