Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2013
best. ever. You can leave out the sugar if you are southern, but the texture and flavor is still great and this recipe is easy to make. I melt the butter in a cast iron skillet in the oven then pour the rest of the batter in to cook. No other changes. Comes out perfect every time.

Broccoli Slaw

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2013
I have been making this for years and it has always been very well received. My original recipe called for Brianne's Poppy Seed dressing, but just about any cole slaw or poppy seed dressing will do. Also, you can sub any dried fruit (blueberries, cherries, raisins equally well. Try it!

Ham and Bean Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2012
Very good soup. I dumped it all in a crockpot (after boiling the beans) and it turned out great! Its very flavorful and colorful. I used yellow for green peppers (no big change) and had to leave out the pepper sauce because of small children but otherwise followed the recipe to a "T".

Never Fail Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2012
Raised light and tall, yet were moist and not crumbly. I grated in a stick of frozen butter (I keep some in the freezer). Mix just until dough holds together and then let it sit for a minute or two instead of mixing in every bit of flour. Tasty and easy recipe.

Roasted Vegetable Medley

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
Used all the veg's listed but added a yellow potato also. Made such a huge bowl that I thought we would be eating these for days--not so. Every bite was eaten at dinner. I did not use garlic at the request of one of my dinner guests and it still turned out great.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2011
Great "kid-friendly" way to use up leftover ham. I sometimes add a package of frozen corn near the end. Like others, I saute the onion and celery before adding to the potatoes to boil. I have also substituted minced onion when out of real ones, and it was equally good.

Black Magic Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2011
Definitely my "go-to" recipe for chocolate cake. Even my 10 year old can make it and have it turn out beautifully. Top with cream cheese frosting and it will disappear!

Hamburger Buns

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2011
5 stars WITH the changes suggested by other reviewers. My family loved these. Perfect texture and taste. Changes: Halved the recipe to make 8 buns, replaced margarine with butter and put it all in my bread maker on dough cycle. (1.5 hours) Then I shaped the dough into balls and let them rise for a few more minutes before baking. My family doesn't want any other buns from now on and came up with a long list of other uses for these.

Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Reviewed: Jul. 25, 2011
My mom has been making these for 50 years! I didn't know she was so cutting edge. I always heard that this was Elvis' favorite food, so we called them Elvis Sandwiches.

Cha Cha's White Chicken Chili

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2010
Very good. I served jalapeno and cayenne on the side because I have small children, but otherwise followed the recipe. I did take the advice of one of the reviewers and pureed one can of beans to use as a thickener. Worked perfectly!

Broccoli with Garlic Butter and Cashews

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2010
I really liked this! My husband and kids were not as enthusiastic although they said it was good and it all was eaten. I always try to follow a recipe exactly the first time, but this time I accidentally used teriyaki instead of soy sauce (grabbed the wrong bottle) so it tasted quite a bit like take-out.

Pumpkin Pie Bars by EAGLE BRAND®

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2010
Fantastic recipe. I lined the baking pan with lightly greased parchment paper before pressing in the crust mixture and they turned out beautifully. Between the sugar in the crust and the sweetened condensed milk with the pumpkin, these are VERY sweet, but they disappeared. I also used the spice mixture from the Libby pumpkin recipe (cinnamon, clove, ginger) instead of allspice because it is the blend we prefer.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2010
Rats. Followed directions exactly. Texture and appearance was good, but the granny smiths were just too tart. No one ate seconds and when there is half a pie left over, it means something.

Rosemary Ranch Chicken Kabobs

Reviewed: Oct. 1, 2010
Great recipe. I needed something at the last minute that used what little ingredients I had in the fridge and so I didn't even read the reviews before making this. My husband declared it the best chicken he'd ever had. I did leave out the salt (figured 3T of Worcestershire was enough) and used it marinate thinly sliced (to speed up the grilling) chicken breasts. Tender and tasty without being overwhelming. Next time I will try it with much less olive oil to see if it still turns out.

Cedar Planked Salmon

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2010
Made as directed except for replacing fresh ginger and green onions, because I didn't have either. My husband and 2 of 3 kids loved this. My preschooler wouldn't eat more than a bite or two. Probably would have been even better with all the ingredients!

Belgian Waffles

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2010
After getting delayed in starting these, I was in a huge hurry so I neither followed the directions exactly (did not beat whites long enough, didn't alternate the milk and dry ingredients) nor let the batter rise very long. I just kind of "dumped" everything in and went with it. They still got gobbled up. They were only slightly denser than they should have been, but I"m sure that is because I didn't let the batter rise long enough. The flavor was excellent and they had a surprisingly good texture considering my rush. Good recipe!
