This is the best most authentic recipe for Shepherd's Pie I have been able to find. Most of the others include cream of mushroom soup, which is not what I perceive as traditional shepherd's pie. I did make some modifications to suit my own tastes and to make it a little more like what my step mom used to make. I used 1 1/2 lbs of beef, I used 3-4 heaping tsp of beef bouillon and 1/2cup water instead of beef broth and i used a can of condensed tomato soup instead of the ketchup. I also added about 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. I also chose to chop up my carrots and mix it in with the meat instead of a layer of pureed carrots. I also added oregano, sage, and thyme to the meat. For my mashed potatoes I added some milk and closer to 1/4 cup of butter and omitted onion just because I forgot. I know it seems like a lot of changes but the concept and recipe is still virtually the same so that's why I gave it 5 stars. My husband would like me to put some paprika on top next time for color and flavor.
