Probably not really a "food" pairing, but I love Dr Pepper with lime. Also love nutmeg in Bechamel...just makes it perfect to me.

Feb. 22, 2011 7:07 pm
Also, I always thought I hated coleslaw, and I do on its own, but add it to a pulled pork sandwich and I'm in heaven!

Pumpkin pie and a green salad. My mum gave me this as lunch one day, and I remember every bite. Her pumpkin pie is famous in our family, and I was not allowed sweets very often...paired with the tartness of her homemade salad dressing....divine!

Cottage cheese with V8 juice! I must admit it looks awful but tastes great with some Mrs. Dash. Pretty wierd, huh?

Feb. 23, 2011 3:52 am
Oooh, preggers is a different story...I wanted boiled cabbage with vinegar for the first kid, and masses of ketchup chips with a glass of milk for second kid. :) Oh, and if I had a french fry, I had to have it dipped in vanilla ice cream. Good thing I was young enough not to keep the 50 lbs I gained! Terrible!

When my wife was going through chemo she craved hotdogs with chili sauerkraut, and chocolate sauce-we called it her chemo meal

I'm somewhat boring, I like chocolate + peanut butter, and pretzels + cheese best for combos... I used to love baby carrots dipped in chocolate pudding! lol. Sarah - my friend who recently had a baby craved ketchup chips like crazy too!

Feb. 23, 2011 8:25 am
At times I come across ridiculously sweet crisp oranges. When I do, I know it may be time for a recipe I came up with about 20 years ago involving chocolate cake, runny icing and ridiculously sweey crisp oranges. They try to cancel each other out, repeatedly, constantly, erratically and delciously.

Feb. 26, 2011 11:21 am
My version of a "grilled cheese" using a flour tortilla, colby-jack or cheddar cheese and thinly sliced dill pickles. BEfore you say ick, people put pickles on sandwiches all the time, I just use torillas and not bread. Add a little ham or turkey when I'm really hungry ;) Speaking of turkey, I love dill pickles and turkey any day. Saw the french fries dipped in your milkshake. Haven't done that in years, but I definitely did that as a kid. I was never a syrup kid growing up and just ate butter on pancakes or waffles. Everyone always thought that was weird. Oh, and Popcorn like my Daddy taught me with salt and LOTS of black pepper! ;) That's all for now.........

Baked potatoes with butter, sour cream and cottage cheese. Can look kind of gross but is awesome comfort food. Plus it's really versatile. You can go in a healthy/lower fat direction depending on what you use (low fat cottage cheese & sour cream, etc.) and it's a window to a world of adventure when you experiment with different herbs and spices.

Feb. 26, 2011 12:08 pm
I agree with you Chefjohn - I love French food - so as long as you top it with a great sauce - I'll eat anything!

In our house we like to pair Bacon with almost any and everything (try it on a grilled PBJ). Other favs, pancakes with peanut butter, corn chips in chili, and my husbands family like to pair tuna casserole with meatloaf.

I hate ketchup, so on most anything you would put ketchup on, I use mustard, ie: french fries, hashbrowns. I also like cheddar on my apple pie, corn syrup on my pancakes or french toast (I don't like maple), and Mongolian chili oil on my popcorn.

Feb. 27, 2011 7:32 am
As a breakfast sandwich: Peanut butter and banana on a lightly toasted hotdog bun with a slice of crispy bacon and drizzled in honey. Also an all-time favorite snack is Granny Smith apples and extra sharp cheddar cheese.

Feb. 27, 2011 7:40 am
After my parents dropped me off at a Girl Scout gathering I realized I had left my lunch in the car. A girl from another troop offered me half of her sandwich. It was the bologna with a first name, white american cheese, mayo, mustard and lettuce on wonder bread. I crave these occasionally and always think of that kind little girl I met 40 years ago when I finally do have one.

Not a "huge" ketchup/catsup fan, but I absolutely must have it on my mac and cheese, as well as a cheese omelet, great combo! Must have potato chips with my tuna salad sandwiches too!

I remember as a kid, a group of us would pack a picnic lunch and go out in the woods to eat. Two girls that lived across the street from me used to bring blueberry and mayo sandwiches. Never tried it and have no interest at all.

Nutella with ANYTHING and a glass of milk. Newest craving: pretzel crisps dipped in cottage cheese. Fresh out of the oven bagel (never toasted!) dipped in whipped cream cheese--no schmear or soft cheese, MUST be whipped. To be honest, I'm picky about texture and there are few things I don't like (limas, ketchup, brussel sprouts, flan, creme brulle) Great post taking us down memory lane.

Feb. 27, 2011 12:53 pm

Mayo and Tomato (ideally fresh tomato ripen on the vine)

Feb. 27, 2011 2:11 pm
Sausage gravy and homemade biscuits! I very rarely have this treat, but it's a staple from my childhood and a true indulgence when I do cook it.

Feb. 27, 2011 2:22 pm
Okay, so this is going to sound pretty disgusting, and it probably would be to anyone who tried it (excluding myself, of course.) I LOVE off-brand macaroni and cheese cooked in a way that makes it kind of gummy. In my gummy macaroni and cheese I must have obscene amounts of pepper and (here's the really weird part)crumbled up STALE Cool Ranch Doritos. I think I developed an affinity for this when I was broke and living off the cheapest stuff I could find. It's probably the most ghetto meal I'll ever eat, but for some reason I love it.

My Shenanigans
Feb. 27, 2011 2:49 pm
I guess it's a little boring for some of you but I like shake-n-bake porkchops, cooked in an oven bag, with garlic mashed potatos and whole kernal corn. I mix my corn w/my potatos & lots of butter and black pepper.

My Shenanigans
Feb. 27, 2011 2:56 pm
I'm with you, Ella & one of my favorite ghetto receipies is chili top ramin w/an egg stired in at the end and a few snow peas w/ lots of garlic. the snow peas have to go in at the last minut, after the egg is cooked

I have no idea why this is, but even as a child I wanted a cup of coffee whenever we had chili. My folks always obliged, albeit with a snicker and shaking of heads. :-)

A few years ago my husband asked what kind of restaurant I was in the mood for. I wanted to go wherever I could get meatballs and birthday cake. He laughed and joked that maybe I was pregnant. The joke was on him: I was!

Feb. 27, 2011 9:24 pm
I love hot apple pie in a bowl with icy cold milk poured on top....the milk gets sweet like cereal milk and you can eat scalding hot pie immediately. win, win. Best pizza ever is hawaiian style plus mushrooms and jalepenos. Recommended by a photographer who said it's what the emaciated models would order. Something about how the pineapple and japs work together....brilliant

Here goes: kettle-cooked potato chips dipped in warm cayenne-infused chocolate fudge sauce; skinless boneless sardines perched atop a saltine cracker with paper thin sliced onion and dill pickle with a dollop of Durkee's; an extra crunchy ginger snap topped with a thin slice of Havarti cheese...sweet, crunchy, salty, buttery...yum!!

Some of this stuff is trully gross-Chef John- PB&J with oysters or sardines? Yuck! I don't feel bad posting mine- regular lays chips dipped in a local spicy mustard (Webers) with super cold skim milk. I also have to have Frank's extra hot sauce in my cottage cheese with loads of pepper too. Friends from college used to squeeze mustard on their cold pizza-they were from Long Island, is that common there? They also put mustard on their fries. Oh, I also put hot sauce on my salad with ranch- just makes it a spicy ranch dressing- not so strange but I do get looks.

Feb. 28, 2011 1:02 pm
For some reason I've always been a big fan of crisp lettuce with vanilla icing as well as Oreo cookies with a medium chunky salsa. So good! A less quirky combination: Nacho Cheese Doritos layered onto a turkey, lettuce and cheese sandwich. Ah, college.

Peaches + peanut butter (try stirring pb into peach-flavored instant oatmeal) -- mmmmm! Popcorn + hot sauce + lime juice -- this I learned in Mexico -- mmmmm! My other half likes tuna salad sandwiches with grape jelly on them. Says that's the way mom made them, but she denies it! LOL.

Hi ChefJohn, fun question:) My kids and I love mayo mixed with bbq sauce to use as a dip for fries or 1000 island dressing if available. My mother loved Miracle whip with tomatoes and onion sammies. So many wonderful opions about this topic, very interesting! Thanks CJ. Take care:)

I used to know a lady 20 years ago that like cottage cheese with fritos, in fact, the whole office minus me ate this. It never caught on with me, I was too busy with mayo on the fries. That's also how I found out I was in love with hubby, when I pulled out the jar, he said "Cool, you like mayo on em too!"

I grew up with ketchup on french toast, but have to admit, I can't stomach it anymore. I also ate ketchup and sliced cheese sandwiches as a kid....but now I'd have to say red kool aid and pretzels...it's a taste that can't be described. Yum.

Doritos in tomato soup...yumm. tried this when I ran out of crackers as a kid and have enjoyed the combo ever since!

Mar. 1, 2011 8:13 am
I was put off by it at first, but on a trip to Costa Rica we ordered french fries and they came with lime mayo and ketchup drizzled over the top. Fabulous. You can try to order it without the mayo, but they just ignore you and serve it that way anyway! Great topic. I also love "fluffernutter" sandwiches, Marshmallow Fluff & peanut butter mixed together & spread on white bread, yum!

Peanut butter is a recurring theme on this thread. Still, I can't resist sharing my 5-min fix that has been my go-to snack since high school.. Eggo Waffle Sandwich with Peanut Butter and Jam. Toast the waffles, spread on your favorite PB pairing, and eat it like a sandwich! Fast, warm, crunchy, sweet and portable!

okay, I've got to say that some of these combos are just plain wacky! Oh my, I'm looking forward to my visit to the USA so I can finally have my apple jacks and cocoa puffs with just plain old milk. (can't get those in Canada anymore so it's a fun trip down memory lane)I do love pancakes with hot salsa sauce best of all but that's kind of tame compared to all the cottage cheese combos.

Hubby's weird combo: Pepsi+pack of peanuts in bottle. Maple syrup mixed with PB on a sandwich. Mine is lots oficeburg crispy lettuce w.Miracle whip sandwich. (First thing wanted to eat after Scarlet Fever as a child!) + fresh sliced tomato for treat. Baked beans, cottage cheese, corn, applesauce = tasty meal! His snack of saltine crackers (or cornb.) crushed in a glass of milk is =d by mine of bread (toasted or plain) broken into glass of milk w/ sugar or m.syrup. (eat with a spoon) Also strawberries+blueberries+vanilla yogurt+granola cereal layered in fluted dessert dish. (better than McDs) Try OJ on crunchy cereal when out of milk - good! How about beans/cornbread, chopped. onions, with ketchup?!

red jello with really cold milk poured over it.Similar to whipped cream but better. Gingerale poured over a glass of ice eaten with a teaspoon when I am sick. Can't drink it, have to eat it. My mom told me to do that probably to make me take it in slowly and keep it down. Works.

My weird combo is mac n cheese and applesauce. My mother would always serve those two items on a plate where I found that the applesauce just runs into the mac n cheese. So now I just dump the applesauce onto the mac n cheese and my 12 year old son loves it that way as well.

In Hawaii, they serve rice for breakfast (instead of hash browns) so to me the best breakfast pairing is: Scrambled eggs with white rice and a pancake on the side.

About Me
I have been a professional restaurant person for 30+ years. I started out as a dishwasher and worked my way up the ladder. No schooling except for hands on experience in locations around the USA. I am now starting my own business as a consultant and food writer.
My favorite things to cook
Everything-except baking and desserts
My favorite family cooking traditions
Gravy, my side of the family is mostly French , so we love the sauces and gravies.
My cooking triumphs
Starting my own public access cooking show-"It's Only Food". Did 33 shows in 3 years as the chef and producer. It certainly opened up a lot of doors and paved the way for changing the way I look at food.
My cooking tragedies
Missing my family growing up and working 80 hour weeks, but I can say that it paid off. No regrets.
