Pumpkin Carving Party!

Traditions have always played a big part in what defines my family holidays. When my kids were little, we carved pumpkins every Halloween. You never know what family activities you do will leave a lasting impression on your kids when they grow up. It all began the other day when my daughter sent me a photo of the pumpkin patch excursion. I showed the photo to my son and he mentioned how much fun he had carving pumpkins when he was younger. That was how the Pumpkin Carving Party evolved.

My Son-in-Law, Granddaughter and Daughter

in the Pumpkin Patch

Everyone came over for a Sloppy Joe Dinner. My granddaughter was so excited she plopped a small pumpkin on the dinner table right next to her Sloppy Joe. We all laughed and told her, we need to eat dinner first. She hurriedly gulped her Sloppy Joe down.  Looking around at everybody, she remarked that we were all slowpokes. Finally, after dinner it was finally pumpkin carving time.

My Daughter, Future DIL, Son, and Son-in-Law

My Granddaughter picked the largest pumpkin to carve and happily dove right in pulling all the seeds out.

My future Daughter-In-Law and my Son

Some Serious Concentration here!

My hubby lit all eight pumpkins and turned out the lights! It was a sight to behold. My Granddaughter was speechless for a moment and then she said, "Boo!" My Granddaughter took 5 of the pumpkins home to decorate her front porch.

Voila! All eight pumpkins carved and ready to scare all our visiting ghosts and goblins.

I helped my Granddaughter carve the cat. She also made a happy face jack-o-lantern.

At the end of the day not only did we have scary pumpkins, but we had special memories that will stay with us forever.

Hi Patches! Thanks for stopping by. We had some carving tools that really help. I bought them when the kids were little at Walmart. We also bought a book at Walmart, for patterns. Very easy to do actually.

Good Morning, scootersandi! You made me laugh! We have these plastic tools I bought at Walmart when the kids were little. The tools are kid friendly. My son bought the jack-o-lantern pattern book at Walmart this past week. I don't know who had more fun the adults or my 5 year old granddaughter.

Hi, What's For Dinner Mom! We had a blast carving the pumpkins. I can also say the adults had some wine to go along with carving the pumpkins. Have A Happy Halloween!

Hello, BigShotsMom! Thanks for stopping by. I am so excited about the new baby. My granddaughter said it is going to be a boy. She also said that she wanted a sister, but God said it was going to be a boy. The baby is due in February. My granddaughter said the baby will be born on Valentine's Day. We shall see!

Good Morning, Cookin'Cyn! The plan was to share the pumpkins. I would keep 4 and she would keep 4. She wanted to take them all to her house. However, since she is five she said she needed 5 pumpkins. Thanks, for stopping by!

Hi Lela, When I saw your note I remembered that I left out the granola from my cookie recipe. It is a pumpkin flax granola that you could probably make with just some plain granola and pumpkin seeds added with flax. Let me know if you are able to find the granola.
Oct. 31, 2013 7:24 am
Hello, Cheerios! I will have to look for the pumpkin flax granola. Thanks!

Awesome jobs done on those pumpkins! And a lovely traditiona you have there, too! We love to carve pumpkins, but after losing our beloved 14 yr old chocolate lab last month and battling some household health issues, we just didn't have it in us this year. But your blog allowed me to celebrate the carving anyway. Thanks, Lela!

Cool jack-o-lanterns! I think your family enjoyed doing this. Great blog!

Hello, wisweetp! I am so sorry to hear you lost your chocolate lab. We lost our 13 year old Golden mix dog here in September. I know how attached I was to my dog. I hope you and your family get better soon.

About Me
I enjoy cooking for our family sit down dinners. Although my kids are grown, we are a close family that enjoys 4-5 sit down dinners a week together. My family's favorite dinner is chicken enchiladas smothered in green chili. I have a passion for cooking, baking for the holidays and food photography.
My favorite things to cook
I am family oriented and spend time with my family enjoying meals. My favorite things to cook are Mexican food and any food my family asks me to cook. My family looks forward to home cooked Mexican food at least once a week and Italian food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am on a journey to reclaim family recipes that were lost when the cooks in my family passed away. Cooking traditions are a major part of my passion for cooking. On Christmas Eve, we always had green chili and tamales. Cookie baking, lemon bars, pizzelles , and potica have been a must at Christmas as long as I can remember. My family looks forward to homemade pizza, when we gather as a family to decorate the Christmas cookies. Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without noodles and gravy piled high on mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and broccoli and rice casserole. On the 4th of July, there is the 4th of July Potato Salad that I make using 10 pounds of potatoes. Mexican Food is part of our weekly menu--green chili served over mashed potatoes or as a slopper (green chili poured over hamburgers.) I am always making tortillas for someone. They call my tortillas little white pieces of gold. Saturdays are Family night for dinner. It is the one day my kids can request a meal.
My cooking triumphs
Seeking help on the Buzz and the AR Blog has resulted in a few triumphs. I am extremely ecstatic about overcoming the yeast monster. I can now bake baguettes, focaccia and the best rolls in the world, my Grandma Rita's Butter Rolls.
My cooking tragedies
My first attempts at baking bread/rolls resulted in rock hard flat rolls. However, I am improving. Baking at High Altitude is somewhat of a challenge.
