Let There Be Light!

For many years I had a small kitchen. You know the kind where only two people can fit and even then you bump into each other. I didn't have much counter space. When I moved into my new home, I put in the double ovens, the alder wood cabinets, the granite counter tops, and the four bar stools I always wanted. There was only one thing missing, natural light.
I am happy to say, that I had a Solatube put in my kitchen to add more light. I also added one to my master bathroom. I am not advertising for the company, but I love the added natural light. In the photo you can see the Solatube. I didn't turn on the lights when I took the photo.

Now, the challenge is to take food photos in my kitchen. I am an amateur photographer. I do know natural light is conducive to taking better photos. If you care to share your photo tips. Please do. I would love to hear from you.

Hi Lela, beautiful kitchen!! We doubled our kitchen space when we knocked down 2 walls in our kitchen remodel about 5 years ago too. As far as pics, I usually do it outside on the patio. Sorry, BD will be more help then me;)

Wow, your kitchen is beautiful! I'd love to update mine, but it's so expensive. I do love my skylight. I also take my pictures outside (out of the direct light).

Patty Cakes. Thanks for the tip on taking photos outside. I will have to try that. I am sure your double sized kitchen is wonderful. However, when I cook I do make a hugh mess now.

Scotdog, thanks for all the great websites. I will now start a file and check out the sites you mentioned.

Beautiful kitchen! I was supposed to get a Solatube in my bathroom and hallway seems the DH has forgotten he said that! 'Fraid I can't help much with the photo ? My approach is trial and error, take about 50 photos then hope for the best :)

What a beautiful kitchen!

Cathill-I hope you can get some natural light in your kitchen. It really makes a big difference in mine. I don't have to leave the kitchen lights on all day. I love it. Perhaps, taking more photos is what I should do. I only take 1 or 2.
Sep. 27, 2012 3:45 pm
Angellina, KingSparta, BigShotsMom, SHORECOOK thanks. I waited many years before I got my dream kitchen. The builder let us pick out everything.

By the way they showed Rachel Ray's kitchen today on her show, very small.
Sep. 28, 2012 5:49 am
King-I wish I could of seen that episode of Rachael Ray's kitchen. Is this Rachael Ray's current kitchen? It is small. http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/tour-rachaels-kitchen/

It actually has changed since then, but looks like the same amount of room.
Sep. 28, 2012 12:21 pm
Deep sigh! Nope on the natural light but the DH did install some track lighting which helped. I used to know a wedding photographer and he told me take lots of pictures just for that one perfect one. I never really thought about taking good ones until seeing the ones here on AR. Some days really work and some days just seem destined not to.
Sep. 28, 2012 12:25 pm
Cat Hill-At least the track lighting helps. As far as taking photos-I never gave it a second thought either until I saw some of the beautiful photos here. I do think I would like an updated digital camera. I have a small Canon camera and it just doesn't take great pictures inside the house. So, I mostly use my phone camera that takes better photos then my camera.

Lela I have been thinking about a new camera also, mine is from 2004, It is only 4mp
Sep. 28, 2012 8:24 pm
Beautiful kitchen! I have to laugh (and be jealous at the same time) because my I was so excited when my hubby won a Solatube at a golf tournament. Problem is it's still sitting in the garage, about 8 YEARS LATER! Oh well.
Sep. 29, 2012 6:44 am
King-perhaps Sue or Santa will surprise you with a new camera for Christmas.
Sep. 29, 2012 6:48 am
CC- A free Solatube! My that was a great prize. There is always that chance hubby will install it. Or you could sell it and go on a shopping spree.
Sep. 29, 2012 7:12 am
Oh Lela, your kitchen is gorgeous! I've see how those Solatubes bring in the light. Awesome! It seems that the older I get, the more light I require to do anything! Thanks so much for sharing.
Sep. 29, 2012 10:49 am
LOVE your kitchen. I have a one bu## kitchen myself :)
Sep. 29, 2012 12:13 pm
Candice-thanks. I have always loved natural light. I agree with you the older you get the more light I need. Nice to see you here.
Sep. 29, 2012 12:14 pm
Mauigirl-you made me laugh and you reminded me of my old kitchen. I could close the refrigerator with my foot and open my dishwasher the same time.
Sep. 29, 2012 2:03 pm
That's great natural light. Love the kitchen and the backsplash is gorgeous!
Sep. 29, 2012 7:14 pm
Lela I doubt it, if I want one I have to get it my self, Sue is not a Christmas kind of girl. she never seen to many happy times when she was a kid in foster homes.
Sep. 30, 2012 8:21 am
Your kitchen is so lovely! Have fun spending many hours in it!
Sep. 30, 2012 8:39 am
King-two good things-when you pick out your own camera at least you can pick out one you like and you don't have to wait until Christmas to get it.
Sep. 30, 2012 8:41 am
Marianne, I have been inspired by the extra room in my kitchen and also all the recipes I get from AR. My family likes that I am cooking more.
Sep. 30, 2012 9:42 am
Magnolia-thanks for the compliment. Now, I can see what I am cooking.
Oct. 1, 2012 4:30 am
Beautiful kitchen! I love all that natural light coming from the ceiling.
Oct. 1, 2012 6:10 am
Hello, Wyattdogster! I love it. I don't have to turn on the lights all day. I haven't figured out what is the best place to take a photo yet.
Oct. 2, 2012 4:17 pm
I'm jealous! I want that kitchen. And that natural light!
Oct. 3, 2012 7:02 am
Hi, KGora! I had a very small kitchen for over 30 some years. So, now that I have this nice kitchen, I am going to enjoy it. Nice to see you here.
Oct. 25, 2012 6:37 pm

About Me
I enjoy cooking for our family sit down dinners. Although my kids are grown, we are a close family that enjoys 4-5 sit down dinners a week together. My family's favorite dinner is chicken enchiladas smothered in green chili. I have a passion for cooking, baking for the holidays and food photography.
My favorite things to cook
I am family oriented and spend time with my family enjoying meals. My favorite things to cook are Mexican food and any food my family asks me to cook. My family looks forward to home cooked Mexican food at least once a week and Italian food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am on a journey to reclaim family recipes that were lost when the cooks in my family passed away. Cooking traditions are a major part of my passion for cooking. On Christmas Eve, we always had green chili and tamales. Cookie baking, lemon bars, pizzelles , and potica have been a must at Christmas as long as I can remember. My family looks forward to homemade pizza, when we gather as a family to decorate the Christmas cookies. Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without noodles and gravy piled high on mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and broccoli and rice casserole. On the 4th of July, there is the 4th of July Potato Salad that I make using 10 pounds of potatoes. Mexican Food is part of our weekly menu--green chili served over mashed potatoes or as a slopper (green chili poured over hamburgers.) I am always making tortillas for someone. They call my tortillas little white pieces of gold. Saturdays are Family night for dinner. It is the one day my kids can request a meal.
My cooking triumphs
Seeking help on the Buzz and the AR Blog has resulted in a few triumphs. I am extremely ecstatic about overcoming the yeast monster. I can now bake baguettes, focaccia and the best rolls in the world, my Grandma Rita's Butter Rolls.
My cooking tragedies
My first attempts at baking bread/rolls resulted in rock hard flat rolls. However, I am improving. Baking at High Altitude is somewhat of a challenge.
