Butternut Squash and Spicy Sausage Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2015
Very good. Made as directed except used spicy venison sausage. Did not use optional cream, as it was rich enough without. The butternut squash as a soup base is something I'll try with other recipes.

Turnip Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
I had never eaten a turnip and was looking for a new vegetable for the family to try. Two out of four kids, plus my husband and I all gave this recipe a thumbs up. That's a pretty good rating for any vegetable in my house. I may use a little less sugar next time because I tasted a cube of the turnip plain out of curiosity and it was already kind of sweet. My daughter said the taste reminded her of sweet carrots. I'll probably make this again.

Baked Potato Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
I tripled this recipe for a big group and it was great. I was expecting it to be a little creamier, but once I got over that surprise, I was very pleased. We served it with sour cream, cheese, and bacon pieces for garnish.

Steff's Shepherd Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
I've made Shepherd's Pie before (without a recipe - just trying to replicate someone else), but this was the best. I realized after I'd decided to make it that I didn't have cream of mushroom so I used cream of chicken. And I also realized I was out of green beans, so I used corn. I also added a few diced peppers to the hamburger meat while browning it. I diced the peppers and onions very tiny so that my kids wouldn't see them. I will definitely make it again, and I will try it with the green beans next time. Awesome family-friendly recipe.

Chocolate 'N' Oat Bars

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
The whole family loved this recipe even though I messed up on the directions (just didn't read carefully). I did not reserve any of the mixture for a top layer, so I just cooked it without a top layer. It was a great treat and easy to make - definite keeper!

Mustard Based BBQ Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
My daughter made this under my supervision for a large group as a side sauce for pulled pork. We followed the recipe exactly, doubling it; however as an oversight, we didn't actually cook the sauce like the directions say to. We did warm it in the microwave for about 30 seconds just before serving. I personally thought it was good but a little too much like honey mustard, but many of our guests said it was delicious, and my husband agreed with them.

Vinegar Based BBQ Sauce

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
My 11 year old daughter and I made this to go over pulled pork. Actually she made it an I directed. It was great. She received many compliments from the large group we were cooking for. We followed the recipe exactly, doubling it. We warmed in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds before serving. A perfect vinegar sauce!

Southern Dill Potato Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
I made this for a large group (50 people) and received rave reviews. I followed the recipe exactly except that I used celery seed instead of celery salt since I didn't have any. It was the perfect potato salad, and I will definitely make it again.
