Challah II

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
I don't know what I did wrong, but the bread never rose. I saw that someone else had the same problem and tried re-kneading it, it still didn't rise. Well it was my daughter who was helping so we went ahead and put it in the oven where it did indeed rise. (It tasted awful though.) The dough was also extremely sticky, I've made challah before and it's never been like that before. I probably won't try it again, all around a big disappointment.

Roasted Sherry Duck

Reviewed: Jan. 3, 2012
This was great! I made it for New Year's and we all enjoyed it (even the kids). It was so moist and the sherry added a different flavor to it. I was happy that I looked at the other reviews and saw the change in directions/cooking time. My 6 pound duck took 2hrs 45 minutes. I also took the advice of serving it with asparagus. I also made baked sweet potatoes with it. I think we all have a new favorite meal. I will definitely make this again.

Simple Whole Wheat Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2012
Also known as Challah bread. It's almost the exact same recipe as many challah braided breads. Whatever you call it though, it is delicious. I like it braided just because it looks prettier.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2012
I made these to bring to a party and they turned out delicious! Everyone loved them. The kids enjoyed cutting them out and decorating. I didn't have any issues with stickiness until after the batter had been worked for quite a while.

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: May 7, 2012
This bread was pretty good. I've made it a few times now and have had to wait for quite a while for it to rise. It's extremely dense which my husband and kids didn't care for and after about 2 pieces I was done. I wouldn't use it for sandwiches, but it did taste good with apple butter. One piece of bread filled me up enough that it was basically a whole sandwich.

Cinnamon Raisin Bread I

Reviewed: May 21, 2012
Excellent bread but it was almost too much cinnamon. I never thought it would be possible to say that. The dough was kind of sticky and wasn't very easy to work with. I read what others wrote about only cooking it for 30 minutes, I checked at 30 minutes and it wasn't even close, unfortunately I ended up opening up the oven more than I normally would which may have messed up how it baked. It smelled awesome though and we will still make it again. Update: made it again and put about a tsp of sugar in when I proofed the yeast. Definitely need to keep the dough in the mixer as long as you can before you knead it. I kept the rectangle more even and tight and it cooked up beautifully. Kids said they liked it better than store bought.

Buttery Soft Pretzels

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2013
These are the best! Way too much flour though. Start with 4 c and add from there. I also decided to make mini pretzel sticks. They were about 1 1/2" around and 2-3" long. Making the sticks, I was able to make around 18 to 20 instead of the recommended 12. The first time I made them I foolishly added all 5 cups of flour and there was so much I couldn't roll the dough out. I almost threw the batch away but decided to make it, this is when I made the sticks, by squeezing the dough instead of rolling it; even with too much flour, they were still very good. I have since figured out how the dough should feel. I usually make 2 batches in a day (not a double batch, double batches often don't work and I don't want to waste all the ingredients). My husband and kids are always begging me to make more and I am always willing to oblige!

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
Easy, easy, easy! I love pulled pork but have never actually made it. I've been craving it and saw this recipe and gave it a try. My kids, husband and I all loved it. We had it with watermelon and corn on the cob served on soft wheat buns.

Roast Goose with Stuffing

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
Great meal for special occasions. I don't know what I did wrong though, but there was way too much stuffing. It ended up being soggy and dry all at the same time. The bird was excellent but I won't make the stuffing part again.

Hot Cocoa Mix in a Jar

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2013
Easy to make and great taste. This makes a large amount of hot cocoa, we were able to split it up for 4 teacher gifts. They were all very impressed with the homemade gift. We gave it with large marshmallows and directions tied to the outside.

Garden Fresh Tomato Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2013
I would give it 3 but my husband loved it and would give it a 10 if it was possible. Next time I make it, because he WILL want it again, I will use 3 cloves instead of 4 and more than just the one slice of onion. I did add basil to it but only one fresh leaf. We used fresh tomatoes from our garden which always makes things better.

Chicken Marsala

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2013
Yummy! I don't normally like chicken marsala but my husband loves it so I went ahead and made it for him. This was delicious! We've made it a few times and it has always turned out good. I used regular sherry instead of cooking sherry, cooking grade alcohol is a lower grade, if it's not worthy of being drank then it's not worthy of marinating my food!

Cucumber Sandwiches III

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2013
I love easy recipes that taste good too! We have a garden full of cucumbers and I had no idea what to do with them. I have always heard of cucumber sandwiches so I thought I'd give it a try. My only suggestion is to cut them into quarters, it makes it easier to eat but still looks nice.

Lime Chicken with Cilantro Cream Sauce and Roasted Zucchini

Reviewed: Oct. 1, 2013
I cooked the zucchini for 1/2 the amount of time the recipe called for and it was still a pile of mush. I had thought the pasta was supposed to be hot but the layout of the recipe suggests that it should be cold, having pasta sitting the whole time while you are just beginning the rest of the recipe was ridiculous, it was also pretty bland and needed twice as many tomatoes. If I make it again I won't use as much pasta. The sauce was good, I do wish I had an immersion blender, it was just another couple of steps of pouring everything back and forth. I had to reheat the cold, oily pasta before I could serve it.

Sophie's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2014
My husband had never had zucchini bread before and we are growing (lots) of zukes in our garden this year. This bread was awesome. My husband and kids all loved it. Dense but moist, like a banana bread. I could see adding raisins in it if you like them. Next time I'm going to light grease and flour the pans as they did NOT come out of the pans easily and I was worried about scratching up my bread pans. Within 15 minutes the one loaf was more than halfway gone and I don't expect the rest to last much longer.

Baked Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Reviewed: Jul. 5, 2014
I really wanted to like this. After eating it for dinner and the kids turning their noses up at it, my husband and I were left with the leftovers. At that point, my husband (who eats anything) said he didn't like it either so it was just me eating it. After eating the leftovers one time, the intense cheese and cracker flavor was so strong I couldn't eat anymore of it. The day of it was better and if I didn't have any leftovers it might have gotten an extra star but since 4 of the 5 people in my house didn't like it, I had to only give it 2.

Grilled Salmon I

Reviewed: Jul. 27, 2014
We made this tonight and my husband and I loved it. We had a 2 1/2 lbs salmon fillet and I cut it to fit inside the grilling rack. There was plenty of marinade for it. We cooked with a charcoal grill, it was excellent! Thanks for posting this, we will be having it often!

Easy Vodka Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 27, 2014
Be sure to use a good vodka or the liquor is overpowering. A good vodka won't have as strong of a bite to it as the cheap stuff. I gave it 4 stars simply because I had to doctor it up. Doctor it up with oregano, marjoram, garlic and it tastes great!
