I've made this recipe a couple of times now. It's quick and tasty. However, I do suggest a couple of alterations. Like other reviewers I'm not keen on the texture of onion rings in my gratin, but don't omit them. They add a nice flavor to the finished dish. Instead, dice then and sautée with the butter when making the cream sauce. Also, I slice my potatoes a lot thinner then 1/4". It helps the dish cook quicker. Mine was done in under an hour. I layer my potatoes with the sauce to make sure the sauce is evenly distributed throuout the dish. Finally, I add a bit more cheese then called for and reserve a little for sprinkling on top. As CathyM says, you can use a variety of cheeses. Try it with gruyere. It' amazing! Thanks Cathy!
