Potato Leek Soup III

Reviewed: Jun. 5, 2012
Made as directed but added a little crushed garlic with leeks, and then added cooked bacon (6 slices). Used white pepper and was very gentle with the salt. Great recipe, it is going in the binder as a favorite! Thanks!

Never, Never Fail Pie Pastry

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2009
I have made this pastry twice in the past two weeks. The first time, I used it for a double crust turkey pot pie, and this week for 2 fresh fruit pies and turnovers. I substituted shortening for the lard, as I cannot handle the taste or smell of lard. It has come out great. I would use butter if it was not so expensive, perhaps for a pie for the holidays. The caution stands that DONT add additional flour. It is really creamy, but as you knead it, it comes into a nice smooth dough. Also, I have found it doesn't hold up too well if left to sit for too long (harder to roll out). Next time, I will put it in the fridge till ready to use. Great flavor too, I like the addition of the vanilla.

French Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2009
This is the BEST bread! I used 5 cups of all purpose flour, 5 teaspoons of rapid rise yeast, a teaspoon of sugar to kick start the yeast. I also added a tablespoon of butter to the batter. When the bread was done, I poured a tablespoon each of melted butter and honey on top of them, covered with foil and a damp towel for 15 minutes. It made the bread soft and delectible. Thank you all who put their tips online, this recipe is going to be one that will be made often in my house!

Country White Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2009
This is definately now my go-to recipe for basic white bread, especially for sandwiches. The texture is great, not to light not too heavy. I dissolved my yeast in the water and sugar and let sit 10 minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients. I am not sure if this helped or not, since I was using instant yeast. The bread rose beautifully in a warm oven as others suggested, and the loafs were high and lovely. Just what I was looking for in a sandwich bread loaf. I brushed the tops before baking with an egg white wash to get a nice brown color. My family loved this bread and we did not think it too sweet. Thanks for the recipe!

The Best Doggy Biscuits!

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2011
Dogs loved them, I made them with low sodium chicken broth intead of water and added some parsly for breath. I added a little salt for taste, but just a shake or two, nowhere near the amount the recipe called for. My Sheltie is a therapy dog, so no peanut butter, even though he would like it, because too many kids in school with peanut allergies. IMHO, I would keep this in mind when giving as gifts. Instead of balling the dough, I just pressed it flat into the cookie sheet, then cut it into training size bites with the edge of a spatula while still warm from the oven. Much easier!

Maple Walnut Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2009
I made this exactly as directed with the graham cracker crust I from this site. It was still pudding- like consistency after the 30 minute bake time. I returned it to oven for another 15 min on 328f

Grandma VanDoren's White Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2009
This was a very nice tasting bread, but a little crumbly and light for my taste. I prefer a more dense bread, especially for sandwiches. This is a good dinner bread, and if sliced thick, is good toasted with jam, but won't hold up to hard butter.
