About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
Soups and casseroles, pies and cookies and traditional southern country cooking such as meatloaf and mashed potatoes, southern fried corn and cornbread with a Mexican flair.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Comfort foods such as roast turkey and family recipes passed down from 2 previous generations which include recipes for New England Boiled Custard and Jam Cake (both dishes served in our home on Thanksgiving and Christmas every year).
My cooking triumphs
In the baking category, I won second place in a baking contest for my Rugelach but I was told by several people in attendance that I should have gotten first place.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I roasted a turkey I didn't know that the neck and giblets were in the turkey cavity and prepared the bird with them still inside. My husband was so impressed when he saw the gorgeous golden color of the turkey but we were both surprised by what we found inside! I have never lived it down! Another cooking disaster for me is every attempt I have made to make Chicken and Dumplings has turned into a complete waste of time and ingredients. Each time, the result has been inedible. This is one challenge I hope to live long enough to conquer..

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles
I made these yesterday and they are simply wonderful! Without a doubt the BEST Snickerdoodle recipe I have ever tried or eaten. I made them exactly as directed with just 2 exceptions. I omitted the use of shortening and used all butter instead and I baked them for exactly 8 minutes as another reviewer recommended. The result was excellent. This recipe is a keeper and will be made at my house for many years to come!

Cherry Crunch
Ok, so I just made this today and I was very pleased with the result. Wonderful dessert! Like some of the others, I did add almond extract to the canned cherries because those two things just compliment each other so well. Also I did not put the oats in the bottom crust. I just made that with the flour, butter, cinnamon and sugar (as some others suggested) and used the oats, half (or there about)of the flour and cinnamon and butter and sugar to make the crunchy crumb topping. It was superb! Those are the only changes I made in this recipe and I will be making it for years to come. Thank you for sharing!

Jam Filled Butter Cookies
I am happy to give this recipe 5 stars because the basic recipe is just so good. However, after reading reviews, I did make a few minor adjustments for my own personal taste. I added just a pinch of salt to the dough and also added 1 tsp. of almond extract to the dough because we like that flavor. Then as a variation, I used the egg whites from the 2 egg yolks as an egg wash to brush over the outside of the cookie dough balls and then rolled the outside in crushed, toasted pecans before making the thumb print and adding the jam to the center. I made half the cookies without nuts and the other half with. I have been on a mission to find the perfect thumb print cookie for our taste and this recipe definitely fits the bill. They are wonderful. This is a real keeper and one I will be making for many years to come! Thanks so much for sharing this one.
