Green Velvet Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2003
Wow. This was super soup. So easy: just dump the first group of ingredients into a pot, simmer an hour, dump the second group, simmer again, puree. Simple. And really really tasty. Healthy, too!

Roasted and Curried Butternut Squash Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2003
Hmm. I may have screwed this up, so it might be a good recipe. Anyway, I didn't use enough roasted garlic, which really would have upped the sweet/smoky flavour. I also used a bit too much curry, which overpowered the dish. Add the yoghurt: it's cool note really balances the curry.

Egg Salad I

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2003
I added even more dill, since I love it so. I like how light this recipe is on the mayonnaise; the egg/mustard/dill taste combo is so melodious that the mayonnaise isn't even missed! I didn't have paprika on hand so I used a sprinkle ground red pepper instead, to give it some heat. Mmm.

Hillary Clinton's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2002
I think this is a fool-proof, crowd-pleasing cookie. The oatmeal makes the cookie nicely chewy but doesn't overpower the cookie with oatmeal taste. I use Ghiradelli Double Chocolate chips for a really sumptuous cookie. Sometimes I substitute 1 c. dried tart cherries for the chips, to make a more sophisticated cookie. I think the shortening really makes the texture of this cookie sublime, which is unfortunate because I wish I didn't have to use shortening, as it contains unhealthy partially hydrogenated oils.

Chocolate Bombs

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2002
I'm Swedish and these are almost perfect renditions of my favorite cafe treat: chokladbollar. Pearl sugar is hard to find in the US, though, so you can roll them in sweetened coconut flakes or coarse grind turbinado sugar, too.

Sage Roasted Pork Tenderloin and Beans

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2002
Excellent, easy and can be partially made ahead. As suggested by a previous reviewer, I browned the tenderloins in a pan before roasting (don't forget to reduce oven cooking time, though). Great flavours, good presentation. I used fresh sage and more of it than called for in the recipe.

Marrakesh Vegetable Curry

Reviewed: Jul. 27, 2002
Excellent flavours in this recipe, but it needs a little tweaking. I doubled the spices and found it to be quite zingy, however I can't imagine having how mild it would have been with the original amount of spice. This recipe serves 6 as a main course or 8 as a side dish. I used carrot orange juice and grated fresh ginger, which worked well. This is not a pretty dish to look at, but close your eyes and the flavours are beautiful!
